Karlach Cliffgate is a tiefling warrior from Baldur’s Gate who has escaped ten years of forced service in Zariel’s army. An infernal engine replaces her heart, and an illithid tadpole threatens her with ceremorphosis. She seeks freedom from the archdevil and a chance to reclaim her life beyond the Hells.

Karlach grew up in a modest, happy household in the Outer City and worked odd jobs to support her parents. She later became Enver Gortash’s bodyguard, drawn by the pay and the opportunity to provide for her family. His trust earned her respect, but he sold her to Zariel to finance his ambitions in Baldur’s Gate. The archdevil replaced Karlach’s heart with an experimental machine and conscripted her into the Blood War.

For a decade, Karlach fought demons in Avernus and became one of Zariel’s prized soldiers. Her success offered no release from captivity or the isolation of living among devils. She endured through her determination to live freely and her desire for vengeance.

A passing nautiloid offered an escape. Karlach fought her way toward it while Wyll, a hunter sent after her, pursued her aboard. They became separated during the fighting, and mind flayers captured and infected her. Her escape leaves her facing another threat to her autonomy, but she remains intent on surviving and returning to the life stolen from her.
