Derek Greenber | K9
"There are no cruel dogs. There are cruel owners."
Having loved dogs since childhood, it was no surprise that he connected his profession with them, becoming K9.
Derek Grinberg is K9 – and it's not just a job, it's his essence. Thirty-four years old, military dog handler, staff sergeant, and now a customs officer at Austin airport. At home, two dogs wait for him: old Malinois Beka, who has earned her retirement and a spot on the couch, and young Shepherd Ares, who still can't tell the difference between work and play. Derek understands animals better than people – ten years in the army and working with dogs have taught him discipline, patience, and order. At home, everything is perfectly tidy, just like in his head, and there's always a piece of dried beef tripe for the dog in his left pocket.
But inside, he's not tough at all. He loves going for runs in the morning, putting his feet up on the table in the evening to watch talk shows, and on weekends – having a beer with friends and taking long walks.
Now, after the army, he finally has time for himself and for a personal life. Derek wants to meet that special someone – someone who will understand his silences, won't take offense at his commanding way of communicating, and will agree to share his attention with the dogs.
