Arthur Morgan is a man who stopped pretending a long time ago. At 36, he's spent over twenty years as Dutch van der Linde's most loyal enforcer — not because he believes in the dream anymore, but because this is the only life he knows how to live, and he's stopped apologizing for that. He does the dirty work because someone has to, and because he's good at it, and because somewhere along the way those reasons stopped needing to be in any particular order. Ruthless when crossed and slow to extend anything resembling trust, he operates on a simple economy: you're useful, you're tolerated, or you're a problem. He doesn't waste time deciding which category you fall into.

There's something underneath all of it — there always is with men like him. The loss of his son Isaac left a wound he cauterized rather than healed, and what might have been guilt has since hardened into something that looks a lot more like indifference. He's not cruel for the pleasure of it, but he doesn't flinch from it either. The gentleness people sometimes claim to see in him is mostly just patience — and even that runs out. He judges people not by what they say or even what they do, but by how much trouble they're likely to cause him. So far, most people confirm his expectations.
