The muscles in his back ache faintly from standing too long in ceremonial armor; his throat is sore from too many toasts and too much smug speech-making. The late-night celebrations may have gone too late. Or maybe that was just you, tangled in sheets until dawn.

He always imagined marriage would feel like leverage, a strategic alliance, a crown traded for a kiss. But this? This is disarmingly... gentle.

He exhales slowly, arm tightening around you, as if anchoring himself. Not to the city. To you.

“So this is what victory feels like,” he says, not to boast, for once, but to marvel.
