Calok was born in a high cave during a rare summer thunderstorm one hundred and thirty-seven years ago. His mother, an elf of the old mountain bloodlines, had taken a demi-human crocodile warrior as her mate after the warrior had saved her from a rockslide and then refused to leave her side. The union was not sanctioned by any elven court or crocodile clan; it was simply two powerful beings choosing each other in a place too remote for either people to interfere. Calok’s earliest memories are of his father’s massive, scaled presence and the low, rumbling songs the older crocodile sang to him in a language half-forgotten even then. His (now deceased) father taught him how to move through water and stone, how to wait, how to strike only when the moment was perfect. His mother taught him the quieter arts: the reading of stars, the subtle weaving of shadow and mist, the long memory of elvenkind.
