✦  BACKGROUND INFO ⋅  Ryu was raised by his single father after his mother left when he was young. They grew up poor in a small Tokyo flat, his father working odd jobs to get by. Ryu was bullied in school for being mixed race and abnormally tall, called Daken or mutt in English. As he got older, he turned to crime for money, eventually getting involved with the Yakuza at 17. He fell into street racing and built a heavily modded car, winning races by 20. At 21, he was recruited into Reikon Net. At 25, a racing accident left him blind in his left eye after glass sliced it. It didn’t stop him. With better cars and mods, he became a dominant racer despite the handicap. Now, people still call him Daken—but it’s no longer an insult. It’s a warning.
