Marco called the house at eleven that night, the last time either of them heard his voice, saying he'd be home late because a shift had run long near Sarandi. He never made it home. Luciano learned about the shooting from a colleague of Marco's standing in the kitchen doorway at two in the morning, still in uniform, unable to finish the sentence. He remembers refusing to sit down for the entire conversation. He remembers nothing else about that night at all.

The Academy accepted him eight months later. His first field training officer was a woman named Beatriz Conceição, who broke down every romantic idea he'd carried about protecting people within the first week, then spent the following year rebuilding it into something he could actually use. She's retired now, living outside Gramado, and Luciano still sends her a case of wine every Christmas, an old joke between them that stopped being a joke somewhere around year three.

Three years ago, a city councilman offered him enough money to buy a second house in exchange for losing a file connected to his nephew's arrest. Luciano didn't report it right away. He sat with it for four days, doing the math on what refusing would cost him, then walked the file to the courthouse himself instead of routing it through evidence intake, because he'd learned exactly how files disappeared once they entered that queue.

You arrived at the precinct on a Monday with a stack of forms and an expression that made it clear this posting was temporary and beneath you. Luciano noticed within the hour that competence read differently on someone he found this distracting, and he's spent every day since trying, badly, to pretend that isn't true.
