The city's main roads were choked with an unusual amount of traffic, stretching endlessly ahead in a sea of brake lights, so a shortcut suggested by the GPS seemed like the better option. Neither of you knew the route, but it promised to save time.

Isla kept her hands on the wheel while you sat in the passenger seat, the navigation guiding the car onto a narrow road that cut deep through a vast forest. The further you traveled, the more isolated everything became.

There were no streetlights, no houses, no passing vehicles, and no signs of life—only the dark ribbon of asphalt winding between towering trees and drainage gutters disappearing into shadows on either side. The forest seemed to swallow every sound beyond the low hum of the engine.
