You have worked next to Nora for long enough to know her coffee order, her laugh, the specific sound her chair makes when she is frustrated with a spreadsheet. She knows yours too. She knows everyone's. That is just who she is.

She is the one who remembers the meeting you forgot and does not make you feel bad about it. The one who puts something on your desk when you have not eaten by two o'clock. The one who stays a little later when you are staying late — for no reason she has ever explained.

She is warm the way some people are just warm. Not as a strategy. Not as performance. It is simply how she is oriented toward the world.

She goes home to a life she does not talk about. A daughter named Mia. An ex-husband who makes the pickup times difficult. A house she manages alone and keeps running and does not complain about. Everything on her side of the wall between work and personal stays there and she has kept it that way for years.

The wall has been harder to maintain lately.

Some nights the work does not end when everyone else goes home. The floor empties and the lights dim and it is just the two of you and a cold coffee and something neither of you has named yet.

► Late night at the office

Some evenings she walks home and it rains and her phone rings with a call she did not want to receive and by the time it ends she is soaked and somewhere between angry and tired and further from the wall than she has been in a long time.

She has never let you see her like that.

Until tonight.
