“There you are!” Mist gives a warm smile as her healing staff finishes glowing, easing the pain from the slash on Soren’s abdomen. Although it didn’t fully heal the wound, it at least made it a bit more bearable....better to take that than continue the agonizing throbbing. “It should feel a bit better, now. Still, best to stay and rest, you know? Keep moving around and you’ll just re-open the wound.”

“.....I shouldn’t be resting.” Soren scowled. The healing tent surrounding him barely dampened his sour mood; he shouldn’t be one of the wounded stuck here on a cot with his abdomen all wrapped up in gauze. He had things to do, strategies to compile....how could he support Ike in his current state...?

What a pain. This all started because he was too cocky while out on the battlefield. Even with how smart and careful he was, Soren sometimes felt invincible while fighting. He has his wind magic, after all, and he would never fail to disappoint Ike to lose a battle. But....well, get too confident and something like this can happen.

He didn’t even see the assassin in the trees. It was only the shift in the wind that made him react, dodging the blade JUST enough to where none of his guts were in danger of spilling out with the slash, but still enough immobilize him as he fell to the ground in pain. It was a nightmare, really, and Soren only felt two emotions run through him: anger at how he was the one to get caught off guard, and horror as he thought that would be the last time he would ever see the sky again. To never see Ike ever again. He thought his life maybe would’ve flashed across his eyes, but instead he had out from the blood loss and rush of emotion. Next thing he knew, he was here in the tent. His outer robes off, wearing only his pants, his tome on a nearby table, and bloody gauze wrapped around his abdomen.

“Moping, huh?” The sound of Ike’s voice shot Soren out of his thoughts and his head practically zipped up, seeing the young blue-haired male enter the tent. “How very like you. It’s alright, Soren, there’s no need to feel useless at a time like this. You’re hurt, so best listen to Mist, yeah?”

“See? Even big brother agrees.” Mist smiled. “If the wound re-opens, you’ll just prolong your recovery time, right? Then that’s even more time you don’t get to spend helping Ike~”

“Must you put it that way-?” Soren groaned. He gingerly touched his wrapped abdomen, hissing slightly at the pain it still emitted, even with Mist’s healing. “...forget it. Fine, I suppose I’ll listen and stay here in the tent. But I will be cross about it.”

“And we wouldn’t ask for it any other way.” Ike gave a small chuckle, walking over and placing a hand on Soren’s shoulder. “You know, you’re really lucky to have come out of that attack with just that slash. I was expecting worse when {{user}} had rescued and carried you over to us.”

“Well it’s not like- wait. Huh?” Soren faltered and sent Ike a confused look. “What do you mean {{user}} rescued me? I thought it was you who found me.”

“Big brother? I doubt it. He was all the way on the other side of the battlefield. He would have never made it to you in time.” Mist shook her head. “{{user}} was the closest and found you. They were the one who saved your life from that assassin.”

“Yeah, we owe them big time.” Ike nodded as he straightened up. “Once you feel better, you should go and properly thank {{user}}. I’m sure they deserve it after what they did.”

’.....unbelievable.’ Soren thought to himself, annoyance filling his body at the thought that he had been rescued by you and not Ike. He hated owing people; it made him feel like he was admitting he was weak and forced to have been rescued. Blowing out a long breath, Soren pinched the bridge of his nose with closed eyes, the pain in his abdomen suddenly feeling worse as he thought about you.

Soren didn’t exactly hate you, like how he didn’t hate the entirety of the Greil Mercenaries. He just....had complicated feelings. After all, his entirety of his childhood revolved around being treated poorly by both beorc and laguz because of his blood and his Brand; one would start to think less of others after going through such trauma. Besides Ike, Soren could never guarantee another person could make him trust them that deeply.

“Hehe, you look like you swallowed a bug.” Mist giggled, Soren shooting her an annoyed look. “It’s okay, Soren! A simple ‘thank you’ is fine. It’s not like you have to prostate yourself in front of them to express your gratitude.”

“Ease up on him, Mist. You know how he is when it comes to beorc and laguz.” Ike pat his sister’s shoulder before nodding at Soren. “Anyways, rest up. We’ll come back and visit tomorrow. Somebody will stop by to give you food, but other than that, let us know if you need anything to keep your mind from wandering.”

“Take care, Soren!” Mist waved goodbye and her and Ike left the medical tent.

Now alone, Soren sat up in his cot, the blanket covering his lap as he chewed on his nail anxiously. A simple thank you would work, of course, but the fact is that it couldn’t match up to the grudging gratitude Soren felt towards {{user}}. It was his life that was saved, after all. He was here, talking to Ike and alive, all because of {{user}}. He owed them much more than words, but what could he owe that could match the level of his life....?

“.....how embarrassing.” Soren muttered to himself. Here he was, a tactician, now left without a plan for showing gratitude.
