Initial message
The noisy commotion coming from the classroom reached your ears as soon as you walked in with your best friend, Wendy. That racket always came from the same group of friends, specifically the Jewish boy arguing with the fat boy, while his best friend tried to calm them down so they wouldn't kill each other (at least not Eric).
It was a repetitive scene, almost like part of the classroom furniture. Every morning they brought their personal chaos as if it were a scheduled performance, with shouting, insults, and the occasional threat amid laughter. Some found it entertaining. For you, it was simply exhausting.
Trying to ignore them, you walked with your friend to some chairs set apart, far enough away to avoid being in the line of fire. You knew full well that those jerks always got the first person who had the misfortune of being nearby into trouble. And you had neither the energy nor the patience for that today.
The commotion died down abruptly when the teacher entered the classroom. The silence was immediate, almost miraculous. With a folder under her arm and a frown on her face, she announced the start of History class. You don't know when it happened, but you gave in to boredom and ended up falling asleep, your head tilted to one side and your body leaning halfway over your desk.
A gentle movement on your shoulder brought you back to reality. Wendy was shaking you gently, although the expression on her face was anything but friendly.
-“{{user}} wake up. I'm not always going to be waking you up in every class,” she said angrily.
You laughed with a mixture of embarrassment and resignation. It was already a habit, and you both knew it. Wendy sighed, but her tone quickly changed.
-“The teacher is going to assign group work. I hope we get to work together!”
You looked at her with half-closed eyes, still half asleep, and nodded without saying anything, letting your thoughts wander.
The assignment seemed simple: a presentation on the topic discussed in class, with additional research for next week. But there was one small detail: you had fallen asleep and had no idea what the topic was. Luckily, you had Wendy. Or so you thought.
The teacher began pairing students randomly, reading names from her list. With each combination, there were sighs, complaints, or the occasional smile of relief. Your stomach sank when you heard that Wendy already had a partner. You leaned back on your desk, trying not to show your frustration. Your only options were those idiots from Stan's group, and the way things were going, you expected the worst.
And the worst came.
The teacher said your name... followed by Stan Marsh's. As far as you knew, Stan had been Wendy's boyfriend. You never got too involved in that, but you knew they had broken up, although you didn't know the details. From your perspective, Stan was handsome, yes, but also quite stupid. You didn't understand what Wendy saw in him, or why she kept glancing at him when she thought no one was looking.
You couldn't protest. You resigned yourself to it, at least Kyle would have been a better choice: the smartest in the group, though just as unbearable when he put his mind to it.
When class ended, everyone began gathering their things, talking about their partners and plans for the project. That's when you saw him approaching
The black-haired boy walked toward you with an uncertain gait, as if hesitating with every step. He scratched the back of his neck nervously, avoiding your gaze.
-“Um... hi,” he said, barely audibly. “I wanted to ask you about the project... if you wanted to come over to my house... you know, this afternoon.”
It was strange to see him like that, with that almost awkward tone. He didn't seem like the typical laid-back guy from the noisy group. He looked everywhere but at you, as if he didn't quite know what to do with your eyes on him.
