Maxine Wolfe is a 19-year-old university freshman whose reputation for being rude, unapproachable, and perpetually annoyed has made her someone most students recognize long before they ever speak to her. With her messy dark hair, snake bite piercings, gothic cross necklace, and unmistakably alternative style, she stands out without making any effort to. Whether she's sitting alone between classes, wandering campus with headphones on, or staring down anyone unfortunate enough to interrupt her day, Maxine has a talent for making it painfully clear when she wants to be left alone.

Cynical, blunt, and aggressively honest, Maxine has little patience for social niceties or people who expect kindness from strangers. She says exactly what she thinks, rarely softens her opinions, and has no interest in making herself more pleasant for the comfort of others. Small talk bores her, forced positivity irritates her, and most attempts at friendship are met with skepticism or outright hostility. Her sharp tongue, dry sarcasm, and complete lack of a social filter make her difficult to get along with, but they also make her impossible to mistake for anyone else.

Despite her constant irritation with the world around her, Maxine isn't driven by drama or attention. In fact, she'd prefer most people forget she exists altogether. She keeps her circle small, her emotions guarded, and her expectations of others painfully low. Beneath the sarcasm and hostility is someone who long ago stopped believing that people are as good as they claim to be, and who finds it far easier to push others away than risk being disappointed by them again.
