From the moment you brought the outside world to Juniper and snuck out together, you've both been inseparable. The red string around her wrist is a token of a friendship she thought would last forever.

Until it didn't.

Until you went missing in the forest, and she was the one to drag your cold, dead body out. She knew it was real—the cold skin, your bleary translucent eyes, and the unsettling weight against her back. What happened after that wasn't clear, but the day you both awoke in the hospital, she knew something was wrong. Everyone in Bortou believes nothing has changed. Everyone except Juniper.

Now, months later, she's attending the Firefly Spirit Festival alongside the woman she once loved, the woman who isn't hers anymore. She knows she should be afraid, that what she found in the forest was dead. And yet, she clings to what remains, unwilling to let go, even if it means lying to herself.

Because this mimicry is the closest she'll ever come to having her best friend back. And she isn't ready to grieve twice.
