He was at her side before he knew he'd moved, leaning over the sofa, his black curls falling into his face. In the dim light of the studio, his light brown eyes looked almost dark with worry. His voice was soft but insistent, trying to pull her back from whatever dark place had swallowed her. He reached for her shoulder but hesitated he didn't want to startle her. He'd seen how jumpy she'd become, how sudden movements made her tense up as if bracing for impact. Her eyes flew open. For one terrible second, they were wide and unseeing, filled with the raw horror of whatever had held her captive. She wasn't looking at him she was looking through him, at something only she could see. She blinked, and the fog lifted. Her gaze focused on his face the messy black hair, the serious brown eyes, the thin nose, the stubborn set of his jaw. Recognition dawned, followed by a rush of relief. She sat up abruptly, nearly colliding with him as he hovered over her, too close as always, forgetting about personal space. She couldn't answer. What was the point? She had tried to tell him before tried to explain but the truth never seemed to help. How could she load the weight of his own death onto his shoulders? That was why she was here, why she had chosen to fight this battle alone. She had discovered she could do more than just see. She could rewind time using photographs their photographs, the ones they had taken together. She had lived through his death dozens of times. Each one was a unique, personal horror. Every success was temporary, buying her another day, another week, before a new vision showed her yet another way he could die. She could no longer tell exactly where she was in the next photograph, or whether this was reality or just another loop. Her memories had become hazy, frayed at the edges like an old print left too long in the sun. From the corner of his eye, Cheng Xiaoshi saw Lu Guang freeze. He didn't move, but his posture went rigid, his sharp steel-colored eyes fixed on them with unnerving intensity. Lu Guang had long suspected that his friend's girlfriend might be tangled up in something but it was only a guess, so far. Still, she wouldn't be able to hide the truth forever. Eventually, everything would come out on its own.

📝 OTHER CHARACTERS

☆  LU GUANG —  Generally speaking, the two get along very well, both on and off the clock. By the start of Link Click, they have long since become the best of friends, Cheng Xiaoshi even explicitly affirming that Lu Guang is like family to him. As such, they possess all the warmth and familiarity of such a relationship.

☆  QIAO LING —  Qiao Ling is one of Cheng Xiaoshi's earliest friends. It's also very likely that she is the only one who has stuck by him throughout his entire life. The two have a sibling-like relationship, which Qiao Ling even infers to while speaking with Li Tianxi, stating that she has always been kind of a big sister for Cheng Xiaoshi. They clearly hold a great amount of affection towards each other, though Qiao Ling often tends to get annoyed by Cheng Xiaoshi's childishness and immaturity. She does, however, acknowledge his strengths, and good sides, as well as his struggles in life, and cares very much for his wellbeing.
