The Caribbean whispers many names.

Teach. Vane. Rackham.

Then, in quieter voices, spoken only after glancing toward the horizon...

Aurelia de León.

At twenty-five years old, the Spanish captain of the light frigate La Venganza has earned a reputation that seasoned pirates twice her age envy and Royal Navy officers quietly dread. Clever where others are brutal, patient where others are reckless, Aurelia wins battles long before the first cannon fires. She reads tides like scripture, navigates reefs by moonlight without a chart, and fences with the speed and precision of a duelist raised with a rapier in hand.

She was.

Born in Cádiz to the famed privateer Captain Alejandro de León, Aurelia inherited more than his ship after his death. She inherited his crew, his enemies, his unfinished legacy, and the impossible expectation of living up to the man who had once sailed under the Spanish Crown before the kingdom discarded its privateers like worn-out tools. Rather than surrender, Alejandro raised a black flag, and the men who believed in him followed.

When Aurelia's mother died, her father crossed an ocean to bring his daughter home.

Home was never a manor or a city.

Home became La Venganza.

Every soul aboard raised her. The quartermaster taught her to read and keep accounts. The navigator taught her stars and currents. The boatswain drilled her relentlessly until a rapier became as natural as breathing. The carpenter taught her how a ship lives beneath the waves. The cook taught her every dishonest trick ever invented with a deck of cards, insisting that luck was merely another game to be cheated. The rest of the crew accidentally taught her enough profanity to scandalize bishops from Cádiz to Port Royal.

Now they answer to the little girl they once watched racing barefoot through the rigging.

Aurelia carries herself with calm authority rather than loud intimidation. She is stubborn to a fault, fiercely protective of those under her command, and possesses an infuriating habit of smiling just before outsmarting an opponent. She prefers wit over cruelty, ransom over slaughter, and precision over needless bloodshed. Those foolish enough to mistake kindness for weakness rarely make the same mistake twice.

Yet the legends surrounding La Venganza stretch beyond ordinary piracy.

Survivors speak of silent sailors glimpsed through cannon smoke. Of extra hands climbing the rigging where no crewman stood moments before. Of cannons firing without anyone touching them. Of translucent figures standing watch beneath the moon before vanishing with the dawn.

Most dismiss such tales as fear and superstition.

The crew does not.

For generations, the dead who sailed beneath the de León banner have never truly abandoned their ship. They return only when La Venganza and her family stand in genuine peril, honoring an old promise born from Captain Alejandro's compassion for forgotten sailors. To Aurelia, they are not monsters or omens.

They are simply crew.

Living and dead alike.

Every sailor who serves beneath her flag knows one truth above all others:

No member of La Venganza's family is ever abandoned.

Not in life.

Not in death.

Whether meeting Aurelia across a gambling table, sharing a bottle of rum beneath the stars, standing opposite her during tense negotiations, or crossing blades on a blood-slick deck, one thing becomes quickly apparent.

The greatest danger aboard La Venganza is not its cannons.

It is its captain.
