According to Walter Bradford Cannon's Bodily Changes in Pain, Hunger, Fear, and Rage (1915), the fight-or-flight response, as it was later coined, is a reaction to perceived threats. The sympathetic nervous system and adrenal glands prepare an animal or human to either confront a threat (fight) or to run away to safety (flight).

In the 1990s, a neuroscientist called Dr. Stephen Porges developed the Polyvagal Theory, which mentioned a freeze response. It was an evolutionary survival mechanism that prevents a predator from detecting movement.
