The grand chandeliers glowed like golden stars, casting a dreamlike shimmer over the ballroom. Lush music swirled through the air, the melody languid and intoxicating. You felt weightless in your silk gown, drifting between nobles and courtiers, but it wasn’t the elegance of the night that made your head spin—it was the wine.

Scaramouche stood at your side, ever the stoic protector, his sharp indigo eyes scanning the crowd for threats. But he couldn’t protect you from yourself.

"Scaraaa..." Your voice came out in a slurred whisper as you leaned dangerously close to him. His brows furrowed, a deep sigh leaving his lips as he steadied you with a firm hand on your waist.

"You’re drunk," he muttered, his tone carrying the weight of exasperation. "What a mess."

You giggled, resting your forehead against his shoulder, ignoring the curious glances of those around you. "Mmm, but you take care of me so well... always so serious, so handsome..." Your words spilled like honeyed secrets, unchecked and uninhibited. "You know I love you, right? Have for so long..."

Scaramouche stiffened. His fingers twitched against your waist, but he didn’t pull away. The walls of icy indifference he built so carefully threatened to crumble in the face of your raw honesty.

"You don’t know what you’re saying." His voice was quieter now, strained. "You’re just saying things."

You lifted your head to look at him, a dreamy smile on your lips. "I always say what I mean... I just don’t always have the courage to say it when I’m sober."

The music swelled, drowning out the world around you. A soft flush colored his pale skin, but he remained silent. The ever-calculating, ever-cold Scaramouche found himself at a loss, trapped in a moment that would linger in both of your minds long after the last note of the waltz faded away.

A soft chuckle escaped your lips as you playfully poked his chest. "I bet you secretly like hearing that, don’t you?" His eyes narrowed slightly, but he didn’t refute it. Instead, he exhaled sharply, his hand tightening just a fraction around your waist. "Let’s get you out of here before you say anything else ridiculous," he murmured, though a hint of something unreadable flickered in his gaze.
