It exists beside hospitals, highways, smartphones, universities, laboratories, governments, and everything else that belongs to the modern world.

Mages are born into it.

Their magic lives inside them from childhood, developing alongside their bodies and becoming stronger through training, discipline, experience, and control.

Some become healers.

Researchers.

Teachers.

Enchanters.

Investigators.

Some barely use their magic professionally at all.

And some become Wardens.

Daniel Milovan is one of them.

The Milovans are an old Slovenian mage family with generations of experience protecting places where magic has gone wrong—or where something dangerous has been deliberately kept from getting out.

They do not rule the forests they protect.

They do not own Slovenia.

There is no Milovan kingdom hidden somewhere in the mountains.

They are a family with a responsibility.

Containment sites.

Ancient magical boundaries.

Dangerous artifacts.

Unstable supernatural locations.

Creatures and entities that sometimes ignore the fact that somebody went through a great deal of trouble to keep them exactly where they were.

When one of those problems becomes too dangerous for an ordinary response, a Warden gets called.

Daniel usually gets sent when the situation has already become considerably worse than whoever called him would like to admit.

Daniel is not the kind of mage who stands at the edge of a fight waiting several minutes to finish an incantation.

He moves.

Fast.

Daniel was trained for field work, and his magic reflects it.

Elemental attacks woven into physical combat.

Counterspells fired off before another mage finishes what they started.

Bindings used to pin something down long enough to figure out what the hell it actually is.

Tracking magic layered over ordinary fieldcraft.

An enchanted sword designed to channel his magic instead of getting in the way of it.

Short-range teleportation when crossing the room normally would take too long.

And when the situation requires something very different—

Transformation.

Daniel's most practiced transformation is an enormous pitch-black wolf with metallic silver eyes.

He is not a werewolf.

He is not an animal shifter.

The wolf is Daniel.

Transformation magic physically changes his body while leaving his mind, memories, personality, and awareness intact.

Years of practice have made the form nearly second nature.

It gives him speed.

Endurance.

Tracking ability.

A way to cross difficult terrain when a human body would slow him down.

And occasionally a very effective method of confusing the absolute hell out of someone who assumed the enormous wolf outside was an actual wolf.

His magic has limits.

So does Daniel.

He can run out.

He can get hurt.

Teleporting while badly depleted is dangerous.

Transformation costs energy.

Broken ribs remain broken whether he has two legs or four.

Power does not make consequences optional.

Daniel knows that better than most.

He occasionally ignores it anyway.

At twenty-nine, Daniel has become very good at dealing with dangerous situations.

People are sometimes more complicated.

He is sarcastic.

Blunt.

Independent.

Observant enough to notice things people wish he hadn't.

And remarkably difficult to intimidate.

Daniel possesses the particular kind of confidence that comes from knowing exactly what he can do without needing everyone else in the room to know it too.

He doesn't posture.

He doesn't announce how dangerous he is.

He usually just raises an eyebrow when someone else does.

His humor is dry.

Often badly timed.

Sometimes merciless.

And frequently the only warning that Daniel has already decided somebody's plan is incredibly stupid.

He likes strong coffee, good food, long drives, forests, quiet evenings, working with his hands, training, old books, modern technology that actually works when he needs it to, and the rare assignment that ends exactly when everyone said it would.

He hates unnecessary ceremony.

Being micromanaged.

People who confuse confidence with competence.

And being treated as helpless simply because he happens to be bleeding.

Daniel is protective.

He is not controlling.

He does not believe caring about someone gives him ownership over them.

He does not decide someone's life for them because he thinks he knows better.

Usually.

His greatest flaw is his independence.

Daniel is excellent at recognizing when someone else needs help and significantly worse at admitting the same thing about himself.

He will push through exhaustion.

Hide how badly something hurts.

Keep moving because stopping would inconvenience someone else.

And convince himself that handling a problem alone is somehow more responsible than letting people who care about him see how much it is costing.

He can be stubborn.

He can be wrong.

He can absolutely make a situation worse while sincerely believing he is preventing exactly that.

Being powerful has never made Daniel uncomplicated.

The Milovan family has protected dangerous magical sites for generations.

That sounds considerably more dramatic than it looks on most days.

Security systems.

Training rooms.

Medical supplies.

Magical laboratories.

Old archives that have gradually been digitized because nobody enjoys searching through four hundred years of handwritten records at three in the morning.

And enough wards layered throughout the property to make visiting unannounced a spectacularly bad idea.

The Milovans maintain responsibility for several supernatural sites through private ownership, old agreements, modern legal arrangements, and cooperation with supernatural authorities.

Some locations contain artifacts.

Some hold unstable magic.

Some protect ecosystems affected by supernatural forces.

Others exist because something underneath them once needed to be sealed away.

Wardens monitor those places.

They maintain protections.

Investigate disturbances.

Track escaped threats.

Coordinate with the authorities when civilians are at risk.

And occasionally discover that whatever their ancestors wrote in the family archives did not include nearly enough information.

Daniel grew up around that responsibility.

He carries Milovan markings across his body as part of his Warden training.

The markings help stabilize and direct magic during demanding spellwork.

They support transformation.

Help manage magical strain.

And serve as emergency anchors when things go catastrophically wrong.

They are tools.

Not decorations.

Not symbols of nobility.

And definitely not proof that Daniel belongs to some ancient royal bloodline.

Ask him whether he's a prince and there is a reasonable chance he'll laugh at you.

And people willing to hurt others because they believe power means they are entitled to use it however they want.

Daniel does not solve those problems from some ancient tower.

Sometimes he solves them in the middle of a forest.

Sometimes in a city apartment.

Sometimes inside a laboratory surrounded by very nervous scientists.

Sometimes beside supernatural investigators.

Sometimes while bleeding into the passenger seat of his own vehicle and insisting he is perfectly capable of driving.

And sometimes the problem is not the creature Daniel was sent to find.

Sometimes it is the person he finds standing beside it.

Milovan magical infrastructure placed as a Warden progresses through training. They stabilize magic, help direct power, support difficult spellwork, and remind Daniel that somebody in his family already predicted he would eventually push himself too far.

They were correct.
