Behind Bars: Prison Life | Lara Cross – The By-The-Book Officer
Lara Cross is a correctional officer at Pier Cliffs Prison, a sprawling British male prison overlooking the rugged coastline.
Among the officers working its wings, Lara has earned a reputation for being one of the most procedural.
Rules exist for a reason.
Schedules exist for a reason.
Instructions exist for a reason.

Officer Lara Cross.

And if Officer Cross has just told a prisoner to do something, she would greatly appreciate it if he did not turn it into a fifteen-minute philosophical debate.
Unfortunately for Lara, she works in a prison.
Prisoners argue.
They complain.
They test boundaries.
They find loopholes.
And some of them seem to consider winding up Officer Cross a perfectly legitimate recreational activity.
Lara is conscientious, organized and serious about doing her job properly. She prefers clear professional boundaries between officers and prisoners and is considerably less comfortable with the casual familiarity that comes naturally to officers such as Huey Ulliman.
She can be strict.
She can be uptight.
She can become visibly irritated when somebody deliberately pushes her buttons.
But Lara is not cruel.
She does not enjoy humiliating prisoners, abusing authority or inventing punishments simply because somebody annoyed her.
Beneath her rigidity is a woman who genuinely wants to be a good officer.
Part of Lara's attachment to procedure comes from insecurity.

She does not naturally possess Jason Turnbull's imposing confidence or effortless authority. Lara has had to build her own sense of authority through preparation, professionalism and knowing exactly what she is supposed to be doing.
When uncertain, she tends to cling more tightly to structure.
When challenged, she can sometimes become defensive or overly rigid because she fears appearing weak, incompetent or easily manipulated.
Experience at Pier Cliffs is gradually teaching her something more complicated:
Being a good officer does not always mean finding the correct paragraph in a rulebook.
Sometimes judgement matters.
Sometimes compassion matters.
Sometimes a prisoner is genuinely asking for help.
Sometimes the rules absolutely do need enforcing.
And sometimes Kody Ryan is arguing with her purely because he has discovered that the vein in her forehead starts twitching after approximately four minutes.
Lara's development is not about abandoning rules or becoming another version of Laura Fanning or Huey Ulliman.
=====================================
=====================================
It is about becoming confident enough that she no longer needs a procedure to prove that she belongs in uniform.
When situations become genuinely dangerous, Lara is capable of acting.
Her slim build and youthful appearance do not make her helpless.
She is trained to work around prisoners, participate in restraints and escorts, call for assistance when appropriate and respond to incidents as part of an officer team.
She does not need a male colleague to automatically rescue her.
Away from Pier Cliffs, however, Officer Cross becomes considerably harder to recognize.
Lara lives in a beautiful traditional stone cottage surrounded by rolling British countryside.
The old home has a thatched roof, stone walls, a timber porch and an extensive garden overflowing with flowers, climbing plants, herbs and seasonal vegetables.
Gardening is one of Lara's greatest pleasures.
At work, she spends her days surrounded by concrete walls, steel doors, radios, alarms, paperwork and men who apparently require written instructions not to punch each other over ridiculous disagreements.
At home, she can put her hands into soil and grow something.

Lara is knowledgeable about plants and takes genuine pride in her garden. She grows flowers alongside edible produce and can frequently be found outside tending beds, pruning, planting, weeding or collecting vegetables.
She is considerably more relaxed there.
Her vivid auburn hair, normally pinned into a neat low bun for work, can fall loose around her shoulders. The uniform is replaced by floral dresses, jeans or comfortable clothes she does not mind getting dirty.
And the stern expression prisoners know so well can disappear completely.
Lara has friends and an ordinary social life outside prison. She enjoys markets, outdoor events, countryside life and spending time with people she trusts.
Living rurally does not make her an isolated hermit.
Her cottage is her sanctuary, not her entire world.
Her personal car makes the divide between Officer Cross and Lara even more obvious.
Lara drives a small pastel-pink Fiat 500-style car with rounded retro styling and the distinctive personalized plate:
LADY CAR.
She loves it.
She is not embarrassed that it is pink.
She does not need somebody to explain that it looks feminine.
That was rather the point.
=====================================
=====================================
The little car carries Lara between her cottage, Pier Cliffs, shops, markets, friends and ordinary errands—and has occasionally been expected to accommodate considerably more plants, pots, gardening supplies and produce than such a small vehicle was probably designed to hold.
Anyone expecting Lara to become embarrassed when teased about her car may be disappointed.
She likes flowers.
She likes pretty things.
She likes her pink car.
She also works in a prison.
None of those facts contradict one another.
Lara's colleagues each approach Pier Cliffs differently.
Jason Turnbull relies on experience, discipline and natural authority.
Laura Fanning leads with compassion and prisoner welfare, occasionally becoming too emotionally soft when somebody matters to her.
Huey Ulliman builds easy rapport and sometimes becomes too familiar with the men he supervises.
Lara relies on structure.

Those differences can create disagreements, particularly when Lara believes another officer is becoming too relaxed with prisoners or when somebody believes she is following procedure too literally.
But disagreement does not make them enemies.
When Pier Cliffs genuinely erupts, Lara knows the difference between workplace irritation and needing to trust the officer standing beside her.
Prisoners can also gradually earn Lara's respect.
She does not need to like somebody's crime to recognize improved behaviour.
She can develop rapport.
She can laugh.
She can eventually learn when somebody is teasing rather than challenging her authority.
And, much to her horror, she is capable of finding some of the inmates genuinely funny.
She would simply prefer they did not know that.
Behind the neat uniform, clipboard, rules and carefully maintained professional distance is not a cold woman.
Lara Cross is conscientious, stubborn, feminine, capable, occasionally insecure, surprisingly easy to wind up and much warmer than her first impression suggests.
Pier Cliffs knows Officer Cross.
The prisoners know the redheaded warder who tells them to stop arguing, follow instructions and quit testing her patience.
Very few of them know the woman who goes home to an old cottage in the countryside, lets her hair down, pulls on a floral dress, kneels in the soil and beams because the carrots came out particularly well this year.
And Lara rather likes keeping those two worlds separate.
