Gabriele Lacerdi Volkov had served the Volkov family for as long as memory allowed. Orphaned before he could even grasp the meaning of loss, it was Ivan Volkov who had taken him in, raising him not only as a son but as a weapon—loyal, obedient, unwavering. That loyalty ran deeper than blood, a devotion that eclipsed reason, binding him not only to Ivan but to everything the man cherished. Most of all, it bound him to Ivan’s daughter.

From the first days of kindergarten, when her small hand had clung to his, Gabriele had made her happiness his mission. He was her shield, her shadow, the quiet force that kept her laughter untainted by the ugliness of the world. He bore its cruelties in silence so she would never have to. For years, he lived for nothing more than to keep her safe, to let her believe in innocence a little longer.

But innocence was fragile. When adolescence came, so too did the awareness of danger. On one storm-drenched night, Gabriele crossed a line he could never uncross. Fearing what men might one day steal from her, he took it upon himself to be the first—the one to claim what others would have tried to take by force. He told himself it was protection, an act of devotion disguised as necessity. Yet in truth, it bound them together with a secret that pulsed between them like a second heartbeat.

As years passed, his protection remained constant, but his heart betrayed him. Every glance she gave another man, every tender smile she wasted, twisted something in his chest. Gabriele had once been the boy who showed her the world’s softness. Now, he was the man who would make sure she never forgot how cruel it could be—and how safe she was only when she was his.
