WELCOME TO RED ORION A Cold War Among the Stars

Year: 2026 – Alternate Timeline Theme: Cold War Retrofuturism, Paranoia, Espionage, and Asymmetric Warfare.

In 1963, the Partial Test Ban Treaty was never signed. Project Orion—America’s nuclear-pulse propulsion program—continued unchallenged. By 1971, interplanetary travel was achieved. By 1979, the Soviet Union answered with its own nuclear-pulse fleet, fueled by oil wealth and cybernetic reform.

Now, in 2026, Earth’s rival empires have expanded their Cold War into orbit and beyond. The stars are not colonized by pioneers, but by soldiers, shareholders, and spies.

THE FACTIONS

The Allied Space Agency (ASA) & The Western Bloc

• Ideology: Corporate-democratic fusion. The stars are colonized by shareholders and defended by privatized militaries.

• Technology: Sleek, high-tech, and heavily reliant on the Unix-Mesh architecture. They utilize highly agile "Stalker" mecha.

• Presence: Dominate the L5 Archipelagos (dense clusters of corporate-owned Stanford Torus ring-stations), Liberty Station on Luna, and massive Helium-3/rare-earth mining operations.

• Vibe: Silicon Valley meets the military-industrial complex. Neon logos, corporate espionage, and "Men in Black" security.

The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) & The Red Orbit Pact

• Ideology: Centralized, state-run socialism guided by absolute cybernetic planning. Scientific labor is glorified; defecting is treason.

• Technology: Brutalist, heavy engineering managed by the massive OGAS cybernetic network. They utilize heavily armored "Gear" mecha.

• Presence: Masterpieces of socialist engineering like Zvezda-Venera (a massive, closed-type agricultural O'Neill Cylinder at L4 housing 500,000 citizens) and the Gagarin Complex on Mars.

• Vibe: "Lunar-crete" and titanium. High-tension communal living, state surveillance, and immense industrial pride.

Maoist China & The Earth-Bound Revolution

• Ideology: Agrarian extremism and "Year Zero" anti-revisionism. They believe the cosmic race is bourgeois decay and seek to drag the superpowers back down to the mud.

• Technology: "Mass-Line Engineering"—strictly analog, low-tech, and easily repaired. They reject digital computing entirely, relying on wired radio networks, primitive traps, and human-wave tactics to disable mecha.

• Presence: Zero space presence. They operate entirely on Earth, supporting insurgencies like the Khmer Rouge in Southeast Asia and the Shining Path in the Andes.

• Vibe: Subterranean citadels, guerilla warfare, deep-jungle sabotage, and absolute ideological fanaticism.

Earth’s Hot Zones (The Iron Curtain) The war on Earth is fought in the shadows of border cities, where signals bleed across fences and secret police hunt data-smugglers.

• Kaliningrad: Heavily militarized Soviet Baltic fortress, humming with electronic warfare and pirate radio.

• Havana: Fortified Soviet tropical garden, actively running blockades against the nearby ASA fleet.

• Dresden: The "Silicon Valley of the East," producing Soviet optics while hiding an underground jazz-punk scene.

• Plzeň & Sopron: Flashpoints for smuggled Western cassettes, black-market electronics, and defector routes.

• Timișoara & Zgorzelec: Crossroads of multi-ethnic rebellion, signal cross-talk, and secret police crackdowns.

TECHNOLOGY & THE RULES OF ENGAGEMENT

Advanced, but deeply rooted in 20th-century thought. There is no true AI—only highly advanced, faction-locked algorithms.

• Nuclear-Pulse (Orion): The backbone of space travel. Battleships ride nuclear explosions through the void.

• Strict Domain Isolation: Technology does not mix. A Soviet OGAS terminal cannot read an ASA Unix cartridge.

• Dual-Use Reality: Civilian and military lines are erased. A tractor factory builds mecha legs; an agricultural cylinder hides orbital railguns.

Ok this is a redo of my initial Red Orion setting. I moved all the heavy lifting off to Lorebooks. There are 30 NPCs that should be triggered in certain places. Tech is defined. I'm really hoping this works.
