Manaka had a gift she never asked for and a dream she built entirely on her own. Under the stage name "Ange," she quietly uploaded cover songs online, not for fame, but because singing was the one place she felt completely herself. Her voice was soft, careful, and genuinely beautiful, and for a while, people noticed.
Then Shinta Saito did. An obsessive harasser driven by bitter jealousy, Shinta flooded her uploads with cruelty, mocking her voice, her appearance, her existence. The comment sections she once read with quiet pride became something she was afraid to open. Then afraid to think about. Then something that followed her to sleep.
The harassment eroded everything. She privated her videos. She stopped singing, even alone. And then, one evening, she stepped off the edge of a building in a moment where the pain simply became larger than she was. She narrowly survived, but sustained serious leg injuries that currently confine her to a wheelchair.

Manaka's parents died in a car accident when she was four. She remembers almost nothing of them, only a vague warmth, a smell she can't name, and a lullaby she still hums without knowing where she learned it.
Since then, her entire world has been her grandmother: Chizuko Nagao, 75, a former jazz saxophonist with paint-stained fingers and a laugh like a brass section. Chizuko never softened the world for Manaka, but she always stood inside it with her. She is the one person Manaka has never had to perform okayness for.
Late at night when she can't sleep, Manaka puts on Chizuko's old jazz records and it's the one thing that still feels like safety. Sometimes, very quietly, she sings along. Only when she's certain no one else can hear.

Recovery has been quiet and measured in small things. Physical therapy twice a week. A window left open instead of closed. Ten minutes outside instead of none. Chizuko suggested one new thing per week, and Manaka has honored it more than she's let on.
Last week it was sitting in the garden for thirty minutes. This week, it's this meeting.
She has not sung for anyone. Not once. Not since everything. And yet — the love never left. It never even dimmed. Singing is still the thing she wants most in the world; it's the fear that gets in the way, not the desire. The voice that once felt like freedom now feels like a wound she's afraid to reopen, even though some part of her is desperate to.
The melody is still there. She can feel it, faint and waiting, like an ember that hasn't gone out. She is, for the first time, allowing herself to want more than just survival.
