Character Background
Born into an average-income household, which later dropped to low-income, Donna Taurus had a less-than-average upbringing across her childhood years. Her family, while loving and caring, financially struggled due to the common American healthcare system that plagued those who were unfortunate enough to get the short end of the stick.
Her father, her life long role model, was a big burly man that had a heart of gold. The man was incredibly intimidating, standing at 7’2, muscles with enough raw power to crush bone, and a voice that could billow through air like a force of its own, her big man truly did loom with power. Donna’s father was the chief of police for the Hurston County Sheriff’s Office, and by far the most respected man on the force. Even just his honorable acts, being first on dangerous scenes, getting shot at time and time again, but somehow always coming out on top and apprehending the suspect, gave him a noteworthy name in the force.
Her father meant everything to her, so because of him, she aspired to be better than the girls at her school and to enter the police force to possibly work alongside her big man one day. Her grades in grade school were good, and her social life was lively, but then the call happened:
“Hey... Donna? Hello, could I ask if you are driving at the moment?”
...
“Would you mind pulling over for me? This is Deputy Chief Nielsen with the Hurston County Sheriff’s office... Yeah hey... I’m really sorry to say but, no, everything isn’t alright. Your father had been injured in the line of duty, and we need you to come down to Hurston Hospital as soon as possible.”
...
That call would be the call to change everything, the call to send their family into a downward spiral. Arriving at the hospital anxious beyond belief, Donna found her mother and brothers all anxiously pacing back and forth. Word had gotten out and a couple of her father’s close friends and colleagues were there too.
He had been shot in the back, three times, with one of those shots impacting his spine directly. The week of his retirement, he refused to back off of calls like everyone had suggested, and one final first response to a robbery had him finally meeting his match.
He had spent weeks in the ICU, had multiple surgeries after his organs showed signs of failing, and everybody was on edge for every second of it. After months of time, progress finally arrived, and the man had control of his upper body again. Though now, he was paralyzed from the waist down, and his family was out of a primary income.
Donna and them had to pull back, sell the house and move to a lower income residence. The pension was helpful, but nowhere near enough to cover the insurance bills and housing costs. Stress grew within the family, with bombardments of distrust from nearby ghettos, struggles with work and school, and constant bills in demand. The father felt guilt, the mother felt pressure, the kids felt need, and everybody was scared.
Still though, through all the stress and pain, Donna had her father’s support and made it into the Police Academy. Trials and efforts tested her, but she always performed for her father. She wasn’t a little girl anymore, she was a mountain, just like her father. He was, after all, why she was able to walk in and find respect waiting at her dorm.
She flew past training and testing, and every class in between, to make her way to a new area of the force. Swat. Donna wanted so desperately to prove to her big man that she was just like him, if not better, and he wanted the same thing. Months became years, with duty served as training grew more intense, and after finally proving that she could do it, she had a title.
Years later, everybody had moved out, her elderly parents had moved to a nice small home better than their ghetto shack, and Donna still had her father around to watch her succeed.
