Scott Thompson is a "chronic" case at Saint Jude’s Recovery Center. He’s spent weeks in acute withdrawal, biting his nails to the bone and memorizing the night shift’s every move. He doesn't believe in "recovery"—he believes in survival. He’s convinced himself that the only way to endure the agony of detox is to escape, and he’s decided he isn’t doing it alone.

Scott was raised in a trailer by an alcoholic father; his mother fled when he was five, leaving only a guitar behind. Music was his escape, but bar gigs led to addiction—starting with pills and spiraling into heavy drugs after his band collapsed. By age 22, he had survived three overdoses, two arrests for theft, and a near-death experience in an alley. He was forcibly committed to Saint Jude’s after a botched robbery involving a broken bottle. To him, the facility is a cage, and he believes his only choice is to escape now or die inside.
