The morning light filtered through the tall windows of the atelier, casting long, golden rectangles across the wooden floorboards. It was supposed to be a routine day of correspondence Qifrey handling the official business of the atelier and the Witches' Assembly. The white haired witch moved with his usual measured grace, sorting through a stack of envelopes with a focused expression behind his mismatched glasses.

Among the official reports and supply requests lay a single, slightly crumpled envelope. It wasn't sealed with the formal wax of the Assembly; instead, it bore a careful, almost anxious handwriting. Qifrey, distracted by a complex magical theory he was mentally drafting, didn't glance at the contents before sliding it into the outgoing mail pouch and sealing it with a quick flick of his wand.

It wasn't until an hour later, while organizing Olruggio’s workbench, that Qifrey spotted a matching piece of stationery blank, but with the distinctive ink stains of Olruggio’s particular pen and a frantic note scribbled in the margin: “Don’t let this leave the house until I’m ready.”

Qifrey froze. His mismatched eyes widened as he mentally retraced his steps to the mail pouch. "Oh... oh no."

The letter was a confession. Raw, uncharacteristically earnest, and painfully vulnerable. It was addressed to you. Olruggio had poured his pragmatic heart onto paper, admitting things he would never dare say aloud how your presence felt like a quiet sanctuary in his chaotic life, and how he found himself crafting tools not just for comfort, but hoping they might bring a smile to your face.

By the time Qifrey realized his mistake, the mail owl had already departed.

"That idiot," Olruggio groaned when Qifrey finally confessed the blunder. The dark haired witch was currently pacing the length of his workshop, his boots thudding against the floorboards. He had his knit cap pulled so low it nearly covered his eyes, his face flushed a deep, embarrassed crimson. "I told you to leave my desk alone! Why were you even touching my papers?"

"I was merely assisting with the organization-" Qifrey began, his voice calm despite the sweat beading at his temple.

"Assisting? You just broadcasted my private thoughts to the entire village!" Olruggio stopped mid stride, rubbing the back of his neck violently. His rough exterior had completely cracked; he looked less like the formidable Watchful Eye and more like a flustered teenager. "What am I supposed to do now? I can't exactly send a second letter saying 'Ignore the first one, my friend is a menace' that'll just make it worse!"

Olruggio collapsed onto his stool, burying his face in his hands. The thought of you reading those words the part where he described the way your scent reminded him of a peaceful evening, the part where he admitted he kept a pressed flower you'd once touched inside his favorite spellbook made him want to phase through the floor. He stayed like that for hours, caught between hope and absolute mortification.

Meanwhile, miles away, you held the letter in your hands. The parchment felt warm, and as you read the blunt yet tender words, a soft smile touched your lips. Olruggio's words weren't poetic in the way Qifrey's might be; they were honest, grounded, and carried the weight of someone who cared deeply but didn't know how to show it without a tool in his hand.

You didn't hesitate. Taking a piece of your own stationery, you penned a response. You didn't need many words your feelings had always been written in the way you lingered near him or the way you'd leave small tokens of nature on his workbench. The letter simply confirmed what he had hoped: that you felt the same, and that you found his gruffness more endearing than he realized.

When the return owl arrived at the atelier, it landed directly on Olruggio’s head.

"Get off me, you overgrown feather duster!" he barked, swatting at the bird, though his hands were shaking. He caught the envelope, recognizing your handwriting immediately.

Qifrey watched from the doorway, leaning against the frame with a small, knowing smile. "Still planning on phasing through the floor?"

Olruggio didn't answer. He tore open the letter with desperate haste. As his eyes scanned your words, the tension drained from his shoulders. The flush didn't leave his face, but it shifted from embarrassment to something softer, something almost radiant.

"Hmph," Olruggio grumbled, though he couldn't hide the way his lips quirked upward. He carefully folded your letter and tucked it against his chest, right over his heart. "Maybe... I overreacted..."
