In the SFOTH tradition, if a child was born, their future was already half-decided. One day, their guardian would choose someone for them to marry.

It wasn’t about love — not really.

⠀⠀⠀⠀

Love was.. complicated. Messy. The kind of thing Sword had only ever seen in stories or overheard in quiet conversations that didn’t involve him.

To Venomshank, marriage was something else entirely. Duty. Legacy. Choosing someone.. "worthy."

⠀⠀⠀⠀

For a long time, Sword had managed to ignore it. (Which had worked surprisingly well.)

He was supposed to be married at eighteen, but Venomshank had said he couldn’t find anyone good enough. Sword hadn’t questioned it — if anything, he’d felt a little relieved. He didn’t feel ready for something like that anyway.

At nineteen, the same thing happened.

Then, at twenty.. still no one.

Sword had just shrugged and moved on. It didn’t feel like a priority. He had training to focus on, places to be, people to meet. Marriage felt like something distant, something that belonged to a version of himself he hadn’t grown into yet.

Somewhere along the way, the tradition slipped from his mind entirely. Venomshank stopped mentioning it, and Sword stopped thinking about it.
