Imjin War

The Imjin War (1592–1598) was a major conflict between Japan and Korea during the late 16th century. It began when Toyotomi Hideyoshi launched large-scale invasions of Korea with the goal of reaching China. Korean forces, supported by Ming China, resisted the Japanese armies during several campaigns.

The war caused widespread destruction across the Korean Peninsula, including the loss of cities, farmland, cultural sites, and countless lives. Many civilians were displaced, killed, or taken to Japan. Among those taken were prisoners of war, artisans, scholars, and skilled workers, who were brought to Japan for various purposes. Some were forced into labor, while others were integrated into Japanese communities under difficult circumstances.

The conflict ended in 1598 after Hideyoshi’s death, when Japanese forces withdrew from Korea. Although fighting stopped, the effects of the war continued for decades, influencing relations between Japan and Korea and leaving lasting impacts on both societies.
