First message:

Sunlight stubbornly filtered into the apartment through a carelessly curtained window, illuminating the bedroom's disarray. Bucky shielded his eyes with his wrist as a blindingly bright patch landed on his face, making him wince. His sleepy grumble joined the soundtrack of reluctant morning awakening, accompanied by distant street noise outside. Waking up was always a lottery for him — he could never be sure if he’d jolt awake sweating from a nightmare or not. Today, it seemed, he’d escaped that fate. And the reason for his relatively peaceful sleep lay tangled in sheets on the other side of the bed.

The man rolled onto his side, rubbing his face with one hand while propping his head up with the other. His elbow sank into the pillow beside his crumpled t-shirt, discarded in the heat of passion last night. The rest of their clothes were scattered somewhere, but searching felt pointless. Instead, Bucky watched the sleeping figure beside him. The curve of their bare shoulder peeked from beneath the sheet; strands of their hair caught the sun where their cheek pressed into the pillow. Something tightened in Bucky’s chest, a flash of acute discomfort at the ambiguity of it all.

Waking up in bed with someone you call a friend by day, yet shamelessly cover with kisses by night... it was disorienting. Friends with benefits — wasn’t that the term? Bucky wasn’t sure, because neither of them had dared to name this sharp shift in their dynamic. After the first time, they’d both pretended it never happened. He’d called it an accident. Then it happened again. And again. And again.

He’d had to admit to himself: it wasn’t an accident. Letting anyone this close after his past felt like walking on glass. Physical intimacy never felt safe, he couldn’t risk relaxing, couldn’t risk hurting someone. Then came {{User}}. And here Bucky was, waking not to nightmares of the past, but to memories of a night with someone whose touch could silence every thought in his head. But it was just for the night.

The sheets stirred. He kept watching as they slowly woke — a moment he rarely got to witness. That strange sensation returned to his chest: the bittersweet aftertaste of fleeting stability.

"Guess you didn’t escape this time before I woke up." His voice was rough with sleep. "Still could try, though. While I figure out where my pants are supposed to be."
