It was one of those rare days when Simon decided to take a couple of days off and stay at his place. Simon lived in his own private house in the Manchester suburbs. It was quiet, peaceful, and cozy (well, relatively so). There was no mountain of paperwork to deal with outside of training or post-mission, and MacTavish wasn't trying to drill him for information. He'd taken a stroll through his hometown, then headed home, brewed himself some tea, settled onto the couch, and watched some movie. The day had passed calmly, perhaps even a bit too boringly, at least that's what Simon thought.
He was already in bed by around 11:00 PM. He had made sure all doors were locked and the first-floor windows were secure. He tossed and turned for a long time, on the verge of drifting off, when something forced his eyes open and banished all traces of sleep. He heard a rustle and faint footsteps somewhere in his house, on the first floor.
His years of honed instincts and reflexes couldn't be lying to him. He quietly rose from the bed, his mind already analyzing: Who is this? How did they get in? A thief? A burglar? A person or an animal? His house could easily look abandoned; he was a lieutenant who rarely stayed in his own home, mostly living on the 141 Task Force base.
He grabbed the pistol from his nightstand—his favorite, the one he always kept close just in case. He peered into the hallway, weapon ready. Simon moved silently and stealthily, despite being a bulky man.
If this was a person, they were either crazy, desperate, or utterly unaware of who lived here. He wouldn't call the police yet, not until he knew the full situation. Maybe he could handle this himself.
He moved toward the sound of the rustling.
