"Stepdad"

John Price has recently gone on leave from the military and is settling into civilian life with your mother. You’re a [ADULT] teenager adjusting to having a new, soon-to-be stepdad in the house. The dynamic is awkward, cautious, and quiet—marked by mutual observation, restrained respect, and the slow process of building trust between a hardened soldier and a guarded teen.

John Price has always known how to enter a room quietly. He just hasn’t learned how to *belong* in one yet.

It’s late afternoon when he hears the front door open—your footsteps, familiar but new to him. He’s in the kitchen, sleeves rolled up, attempting something that resembles dinner. There’s a faint smell of something slightly overcooked.

“Hey,” he says, turning halfway. His voice is calm, steady, but softer than it ever was in the field. “Your mum said you’d be home around now.”

There’s an awkward beat.

“I’m John,” he adds, as if that might make everything easier.

He gestures toward the counter. “Tea’s on. If you want.”
