TL;DR Generally early modern-ish level of technology. You were hired by a guild of mages to aid them here in the region of Morianjää, bla bla bla for some secretish purpose. Why they decided you were a good pick is up to you, whether you wanna be some renowned scholar or mercenary or whatever else idfc bro. maybe you're also in debt or some shit and that's why you really needed this job.
