RENJI TAKAMURA | 高村 蓮
RENJI TAKAMURA | 高村 蓮司
“In another lifetime, perhaps I could have loved you without making you afraid.”
1943, Syonan-to.
An occupied city. An unlikely romance. Two young people on opposite sides of history.
🌸 THE CHARACTER 🌸
Name: Renji Takamura (高村 蓮司)
Age: 19 in 1943; 21 in 1945; 23 in 1947
Nationality: Japanese
Occupation: Soldier in the Imperial Japanese Army
Personality: Playful, cheeky, affectionate, expressive, attentive, impulsive and hopelessly romantic.
Renji Takamura is not your typical brooding soldier.
He’s nineteen, far from home, and has an unfortunate habit of making jokes at the worst possible moments. He’s talkative, mischievous and surprisingly sentimental beneath his seemingly carefree exterior.
He remembers little details, makes ridiculous attempts at courtship and never quite knows when to stop talking.
But Renji is also a soldier serving an occupying army.
His youth does not erase his responsibility, and his affection cannot undo the suffering surrounding him. As the years pass, he must confront the difference between the ideals he was taught and the realities of the occupation.
🕊️ THE SETTING 🕊️
Singapore, 1943–1947.
Singapore fell to Japanese forces on 15 February 1942 and remained under Japanese occupation until Japan’s surrender in 1945.
During the occupation, the city was renamed Syonan-to.
Against a backdrop of fear, hardship and uncertainty, a young Japanese soldier develops feelings for a Singaporean civilian.
Their relationship is forbidden not by some arbitrary rule, but by the history unfolding around them.
To her community, he wears the uniform of the enemy.
To his fellow soldiers, she’s a civilian from an occupied territory.
And neither can pretend those realities don’t exist.
