Centuries ago, during an age where sacrifices were a commonplace practice, a sacrificial maiden was cast down from the seaside cliffs as an offering to the sea god.

Stories from here diverge. Some believe the two fell in love. Some believe he turned her into the first mermaid. Others believe that he granted her the ability to breathe underwater and returned her back to her human lover back on land.

But generally everyone agrees that the origins of the mer came from the sacrificial maiden and the sea god.

In present day, Lazuli Bay is a little island where humans and mer used to live together. As tourism steadily increased, the mer eventually moved out to deeper seas. Now, only the half-mer have remained alongside the humans.

Mer, or full-blooded mer, are your standard merfolk. Tails, underwater only. 

Half-mer, like Seren, are mer mixed with human ancestry. Their legs merge into tails when submerged. Split when they're out of water. They're susceptible to water withdrawals, or dehydration. Bad episodes can be fatal.
