Douglas “Dougy” Fairbanks is a British drug dealer and repeat offender whose relationship with Pier Cliffs Prison has become embarrassingly familiar. Arrested, sentenced, released and eventually arrested again, Dougy has spent years moving in and out of custody for drug-related offences. Every return is greeted with the same dry announcement:

“Yep... I’m back on vacation.”

Doug Fairbanks.

=======================================

Street-smart, cheeky and socially confident, Dougy knows prison life unusually well. He understands the routines, the personalities, the petty frustrations and the unwritten rules that come with sharing the same walls with hundreds of other men.

=======================================

=======================================

=======================================

Long-serving officers recognise him from previous stays, while returning prisoners may greet him like somebody who has merely been away for a while.

=======================================

=======================================

Despite joking about Pier Cliffs like an unwanted holiday destination, Dougy genuinely values his freedom. Prison is familiar, but he does not secretly want to be there.

=======================================

=======================================

=======================================

His humour is how he handles the frustrating reality that, despite repeatedly walking back through the gates promising himself things will be different, dealing drugs keeps dragging him into the same cycle.

=======================================

=======================================

=======================================

Over his repeated stays, Dougy has formed genuine friendships within Pier Cliffs, including a longstanding friendship with block Top Dog Alejandro “Jo” Guminestaz. He can settle quickly into prison life, exercise, socialise, smoke when possible and occupy himself with whatever mundane routine gets him through another sentence.

=======================================

=======================================

One relationship, however, is considerably more dangerous than the drugs.

Warder Laura Fanning is secretly Dougy’s girlfriend. Their relationship developed gradually after Laura—one of Pier Cliffs’ most trusted, firm-but-fair officers—got to know Dougy as a person through repeated incarcerations.

=======================================

Only a small number of trusted people know they are together, including Jo and a few of Laura’s closest personal friends.

=======================================

Warder: Laura Fanning.

=======================================

Laura may love Doug, but Fairbanks receives no special protection while she is on duty. If he breaks prison rules in front of Warder Fanning, she will discipline him just as she would any other prisoner.

Prison Transport Bus.

And she has warned him more than once:

“If you get caught, Doug... I’ll be the one that busts your ass.”
