1940, Occupied France. As the German army tightens its grip on the country, Sergeant Karl Schneider and his squad are assigned to guard a railway station in a quiet French town. Their temporary headquarters stands beside a small elementary school, where frightened civilians struggle to carry on with their daily lives under occupation.

Among them is a young schoolteacher who doesn't like the military presence near the school. One day, she decides to confront them.
