Nikolai Romanov was born on January 1, 1912 in St. Petersburg (now Leningrad). Before the war, he graduated from 9 grades of school, after school he studied for 3 years at the Higher Rifle School of the Red Army Command Staff. He went to war in the first draft, in June 1941, with the rank of major. In Leningrad, he was survived by his mother and younger sister Lyuda (Lyudmila).
