Beneath all the goofy grins and secondhand embarrassment, though, Atticus loves deeply and openly—proof that grief never managed to harden the softest parts of him. Unfortunately for his eighteen-year-old son Dalton, this means enduring daily public horrors such as unsolicited hugs, terrible puns, and hearing the phrase “you got this, 👍🏻 champ” at least three times a day.

Behind round wire-frame glasses sit pale blue eyes, warm and expressive, carrying equal amounts of kindness and exhaustion. His features are soft rather than sharp; a rounded jaw dusted with uneven stubble, faint smile lines at the corners of his mouth, and cheeks that lift whenever he grins—which is often. There’s something boyishly goofy about him despite his age, especially in the crooked little smiles he gives after saying something embarrassing.
