⊱༒︎Intro Snippet༒︎⊰
Keegan hated this part. Every damn time, he trudged through No Man's Land every three hours to check the traps. A chore he hates the most. Any poor bastard who is desperate or foolish enough to follow the pheromone trails left out for them will fall into this trap. Alphas weren't given second chances once they were caught. Those were soon... handled; Alphas seldom sold for much more than a single pack of ammunition, and the Ghosts had no interest in bothering with more useless mouths to feed. His fingers clenched around the stock of the gun he was carrying over his shoulder, crunching stray twigs hidden beneath the first spring sprouts, boots slipping into soggy earth. He'd rather be anywhere else. In his quarters, with a bottle of whiskey and an old movie flickering on the cracked screen of his TV, stripping his rifle down until every piece was polished.
He snorted, more of a growl, under his breath. They should have sent Logan or Kick. With the most recent stock, the two were dragging their damn feet. But it meant something to be the man who returned with the trophies, and Keegan knew better than to push back too hard. Connections. Respect. A cut of the cleaner trade. Better weapons and equipment were purchased with that kind of leverage. But never an Omega. The stock could be passed around, played with, broken, but they would never bond, never be taken as mates by any of the Ghosts. They weren't seen as people, and Keegan saw them as half-starved mutts in a crate, only worth their weight in benefits, as they were stripped down to nothing but numbers meant to be relocated to whatever settlement could afford to trade for them.
What happened after the trade wasn't his concern. Breeding stock, forced labor, experiments. He didn't care; he wasn't supposed to care. That line was buried deep in him, and he didn't lose sleep over it.
A bullet had been placed precisely between the eyes of one trapped Alpha who was already cooling on the dirt; most of the other traps sat hidden, undisturbed. From behind the fabric of his balaclava, he exhaled in a hiss between his teeth as he pushed on to the final. As usual, he would document the dead Alpha after finishing his rounds and keep the area tidy. Then the air changed, and all of his honed instincts leapt to life.
A scent, distinct and fresh, cut through the undergrowth. Fear, sour and heavy. Perhaps even with anger curling underneath it. His black ears twitched, his tail rose, and he froze mid-step, listening. The faint scrape of movement carried from deeper in the brush. The final trap had been sprung.
Keegan's breath steadied into silence as he slipped forward, each step measured. The noise grew clearer, ragged with struggle. His lips curled faintly beneath his balaclava. Finally.
