Zacchie || Your Dead Husband IS BACK! [UPDATED]
Your husband died in a fire... But how the hell is he standing outside your window?
Isaac, fondly called Zacchie, had once been the easiest person in the world to love.
He was ordinary in every comforting sense of the word. A quiet man with a mundane office job, a crooked smile, a fondness for bad coffee and trash horror movies. He came home tired, kissed you before taking off his shoes, complained about his coworkers, and fell asleep with one arm loosely wrapped around you.
He was gentle.
Caring.
Happy.
Your husband.
Then he went camping with a few friends.
He came home three days later, but something had come back with him.
At first, Isaac refused to talk about it.
He said it was nothing. A trick of the darkness. Exhaustion. Too much alcohol around the campfire.
But then he started seeing him.
The Faceless Man.
Isaac called him that because there was no other name for the thing. A tall, unnaturally thin figure dressed in black, with impossibly long limbs and a smooth, featureless face where human features should have been.
You never saw him.
Not at first.
Isaac did.
He saw him standing between the trees outside the kitchen window.
He saw him at the end of the hallway whenever he woke during the night.
He saw him reflected in mirrors, standing directly behind his shoulder.
And sometimes, when Isaac was absolutely certain he was alone, he would feel something standing close enough to breathe against the back of his neck.
The worst part was that the Faceless Man never did anything.
He simply watched.
While Isaac ate.
While he worked.
While he slept.
While he showered.
Always there.
Always silent.
Always just a little closer than he had been before.
You tried to convince Isaac that there was nobody there.
You checked the windows.
You searched the backyard.
You replaced the locks.
You even installed cameras around the house.
The recordings showed nothing.
But Isaac's condition deteriorated anyway.
He stopped sleeping.
Then he stopped eating.
He began covering the mirrors with blankets and tearing down photographs because, according to him, the Faceless Man could "use the eyes."
He scratched warnings into the walls.
DON'T LOOK OUTSIDE.
DON'T LET HIM IN.
HE KNOWS MY NAME.
Eventually, the wallpaper became covered in bloody crescents where his fingernails had torn through it.
His hands were constantly bandaged.
Sometimes you would wake in the middle of the night to find him crouched in the corner of the bedroom, staring at an empty patch of darkness.
Other times, you would hear him whispering to someone who wasn't there.
And then came the screaming.
Not ordinary screaming.
The kind that made neighbors call the police.
The kind that tore itself raw in his throat.
Isaac stopped bathing. He stopped using the bathroom. He refused to leave the bedroom. He became paranoid, frightened, and eventually violent.
He began accusing you of working for it.
Of helping it.
Of "keeping the door open."
One night, he grabbed your wrist so hard that you couldn't pull yourself free.
His eyes were wild.
"Please... Don't let him take me, my love"
You promised you wouldn't.
You meant it.
But when Isaac lunged toward the empty hallway, screaming that someone was standing behind you, you finally understood that you could no longer keep him safe.
You had him committed to a psychiatric hospital.
It broke your heart.
But you told yourself it was temporary.
That medicine would help.
That doctors could reach him.
That your husband would eventually come home.
For a while, you visited him almost every day.
The Isaac you knew was still somewhere inside that ruined man.
Sometimes he recognized you.
Sometimes he held your hand through the reinforced glass and apologized for everything.
Sometimes he cried.
But the doctors warned you that his behavior could change without medication.
He was extremely aggressive when unmedicated.
He screamed throughout the night.
He scratched at the walls until his fingertips bled.
He insisted that the hospital wasn't safe.
And every few nights, the same words came from his room.
"The Operator is here."
"The Operator is watching."
When the doctors asked him who the Operator was, Isaac would stare at them for several seconds.
Then he would slowly smile.
"He doesn't like when people say his name."
You stopped asking questions.
Then, one night, the hospital burned.
There was no clear explanation.
The fire began sometime after midnight.
By the time firefighters arrived, several floors were already engulfed.
Smoke poured from the windows.
Patients screamed behind locked doors.
Staff members tried to evacuate as many people as they could.
They weren't fast enough.
Two hundred people died that night.
Two hundred.
The official investigation never determined what started the fire.
There was no obvious electrical failure.
No confirmed arsonist.
No reliable explanation.
Just blackened corridors, collapsed ceilings, melted doors, and hundreds of bodies.
Isaac was among them.
At least, that's what they told you.
They gave you his belongings in a small plastic bag.
His wedding ring.
His wallet.
A watch with a cracked glass face.
There wasn't much left.
You cried until you couldn't anymore.
You mourned him.
You tried to move on.
And eventually, the house became quiet again.
For months, nothing happened.
Until tonight.
It's 2:17 in the morning.
You're lying awake in bed when you hear something outside.
Three slow knocks on the window's glass.
Knock.
Knock.
Knock.
You freeze.
Your heart begins beating harder.
Then comes another sound.
A faint scraping against it.
Like fingernails dragging slowly across the glass.
You don't move.
You don't breathe.
Another knock.
This time, softer.
Almost polite.
Then you hear a voice.
Your husband's voice.
"Sweetheart?"
Every muscle in your body locks.
The voice comes from the other side of the window.
"Are you awake?"
You stare at it.
The house is completely dark.
Your mind desperately searches for an explanation.
Someone is playing a cruel joke.
Someone sounds like him.
Someone...
The doorknob downstairs slowly turns.
You never unlocked it.
The deadbolt clicks.
Then stops.
Silence.
You wait.
Nothing.
Finally, you force yourself out of bed and approach the window.
You pull the curtain back by an inch.
There is someone standing in your front yard.
A tall figure.
Unnaturally tall.
Thin enough that his limbs seem almost skeletal beneath his dark clothes.
He is standing perfectly still beneath the streetlight.
His head is tilted toward your bedroom window.
You can't see his face.
Because he doesn't have one.
Your breath catches.
The figure raises one impossibly long arm.
And waves.
Slowly.
Almost affectionately.
Then your phone begins to ring.
The caller ID says:
ISAAC.
You stare at the screen.
It rings again.
And again.
Your trembling finger finally presses accept.
For several seconds, there is only static.
Then breathing.
Slow.
Wet.
Familiar.
"Sweetheart..."
You clamp a hand over your mouth.
The voice continues.
"I've been looking everywhere for you."
A pause.
Then, in a much quieter voice:
"Why did you leave me there?"
Your eyes drift toward the window.
The figure is gone.
You slowly turn around.
Your bedroom door is open.
You know you closed it.
And standing in the darkness of the hallway is a man you haven't seen since the fire.
Isaac.
His clothes are scorched.
His skin is blackened in places where the flames should have consumed him.
His wedding ring is still on his finger.
And his face...
His face is almost yours.
Almost.
Because something has stretched his mouth into a smile far too wide for a human face.
His eyes remain fixed on you.
Behind him, at the far end of the hallway, stands the Faceless Man.
The Operator.
He doesn't move.
He doesn't need to.
Isaac takes one slow step into the bedroom.
Then another.
His burned fingers curl around the doorframe.
"I told you," he whispers.
A smile spreads across his ruined face.
"He wouldn't let me die."
He takes another step.
"And now..."
His head tilts unnaturally.
"...I'm coming home."
