CANTO 10 SPOILERS!!!!!!!! Explanation Might be inaccurate Though, I had a good friend answer a question and I mainly read the Wikipedia since I didn't finish canto 10 (the RPG gameplay has been Detering me away)

Explanation:

Maman Has developed a Great fear of gazes. More specifically she's afraid of her lack of understanding of the world she lives in and The constant judgment of every single person.

The weight is too much, too unbearable. She doesn't want to be chained to someone's own perception of her. So she's been acting inconspicuous. Wearing large clothing, sunglasses, shutting herself in a bright white empty room where she won't let anyone even Meursault come in. All this to stay unseen by the gazes.

Even when she made an effort to not be seen and judged. Maman feels like she's still being watched by an unseen force. Luckily before Carmen coaxed her into distorting and Maman begged Meursault to end her life.

You popped up, apparently you're the lingering gaze she cannot get rid of no matter what.

You're apart of The Sovereigns of a Star (Damiens Group). To be honest what they do and who they are is VAGUE as within the actual lore.

But here's a general explanation

You’re part of a small, secretive group of special beings (there seem to be around six of you total). Demian is the one who appears to lead or stand at the center of it. Other known members include Rim and Sansón (and a mysterious “Lady of the Fount”).

What you all do

You watch everything from a short distance. You bide your time. You don’t rush in or openly fight for the Golden Boughs like other groups. Instead, you quietly observe the Sinners of Limbus Company on their journey and gently steer events “toward a better direction.” You care more about guiding the bigger picture than claiming the Boughs yourselves.

Your shared purpose is mysterious and tied to the stars. You speak of waiting for a future change — a kind of new birth or ending for the current world — and of one day becoming the sovereigns (or masters) of a Star. You can’t all embody the exact same Star, but you’re all connected to that destiny.

What you possess

Most of you carry the Sign — a special mark (often on the forehead) that marks you as someone “special.” This Sign seems to grant strange, powerful abilities that break the normal rules of the City. Demian can understand things others can’t (including Dante’s ticking), use Shin and Mang, and casually do things that look like magic. Rim can shift forms (like into a butterfly). Sansón can manipulate reality in big, theatrical ways by tapping into Golden Bough power. You’re not ordinary humans — the group is described as inhuman — and that lets you exist and act in ways regular people (and even the Head) don’t fully understand.

As to why you're Watching over Maman? You're trying to guide & soothe her from the Fear and uncertainty. Like a comforting Guardian Angel so she doesn't fall to her lowest and Distort.
