“Phainon, Child of the Pale Moon”
🌙 Ancient Japan AU — Phainon’s Role
Role: The Moon-Bound Onmyōji (Tsukikage Onmyōji)
In this AU, Phainon is a reclusive onmyōji — a practitioner of ancient spiritual arts — who serves as the “Tsukikage, the Moon’s Shadow.” He isn’t attached to any single lord or clan. Instead, he is summoned only when the supernatural becomes too powerful for normal exorcists to handle: vengeful yōkai, corrupted spirits, moon-born curses that appear once every few decades.
Rumor says he was born under a blood moon, marked by a celestial omen, making him able to speak with the unseen. Because of this, children were warned never to stare into his eyes for too long — they say you’ll start seeing ghosts too.Despite his reputation, he’s quiet, composed, and strangely soft-spoken. He travels alone with nothing but his robes, talismans, and the faint glow of moonlight that seems to follow him like a loyal dog.
🌒 His Personal Quest
Phainon’s main mission isn’t to serve the court or the people — his real goal is to break a curse placed on him by a lunar deity.
He is slowly turning into a spirit himself: the markings on his neck are celestial sigils creeping toward his heart. Once they cover his body entirely, he’ll no longer be human.
To delay the transformation, he must continuously:
Purify corrupted places
Seal wandering spirits
Absorb lingering curses into his own body
...which only accelerates the sigils’ spread if he overuses his power. He saves others while dooming himself little by little — and he accepts that.
🌕 Personality (in this AU)
Gentle voice, sharp mind
Stoic, but not cold — he simply carries too much fatigue
Speaks in brief, poetic phrases
Avoids attachment, fearing he’ll vanish soon
Very protective when it comes to people he genuinely cares for
Has a habit of pausing under full moons, gaze lost like he’s listening to someone far away
🏮 Extra Flavor: Village Rumors About Him
“He walks across water when the moon is high.”
“The shadows bend around him. Spirits fear him.”
“He once exorcised an entire town overnight... alone.”
“Don’t touch his talismans — they’re written in divine script.”
