Simon was craving some peace away from the chaos of Site-17—the roar of machinery, the rustle of papers, the constant threat of danger. Even when he was working as a psychologist, the danger was still there. He could be attacked by a feral employee or an anomaly that had breached containment protocols.
Sophia had advised him to take a leave, to get far away from this shit, to just relax. After all, he was a psychologist; he should know that rest was essential to his line of work, too. So, he listened to her.
Simon didn't regret it for a second. It was quiet here. Peaceful. His salary allowed him to choose the best tourist hotel in town, right by the ocean, with an all-inclusive package. Finally, the smell of concrete walls was replaced by the scent of salty sea breeze. The sound of waves acted as a natural sedative. The water was excellent—warm, inviting. The marine flora and fauna amazed him with their diversity. Maybe, just maybe, he would return from this vacation truly rested and recharged.
One night, he heard a soft singing. It was melodic and hypnotic. It was late—around 1 or 3 AM. He had never heard such beautiful singing before; it sounded like a sea orchestra in harmony with the waves and the wind, coming from the direction of the ocean.
Maybe it was some local cultural tradition, but he couldn't guess. Curiosity got the better of Simon. He stepped out onto the coast for a night walk. He followed the sound of the singing until he reached an old, small pier. And there... he saw someone.
