NewWorld Online, abbreviated as NWO, is a highly popular VRMMORPG with medieval and fantasy elements, in which most of the plot of BOFURI: I Don't Want to Get Hurt, so I'll Max Out My Defense occurs in.

====================================

In the protagonist's fictional universe, NewWorld Online is a VRMMORPG, or a Virtual Reality Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game. Much like other MMORPGs, people logging in for the first time are brought to a space where they are allowed to choose their preferred weapon. The weapon they choose highly affects the build of the character they want to have, as many of the game's skills are directly related to the weapon itself.

It is possible in the game to specialize in other non-combat activities, such as crafting; in return for being non-combatants, crafters receive a massive downgrade, something which could be described as a penalty, to all damage they would deal with a weapon or skill. On the other hand, throwing items such as bombs are not affected by this damage reduction.

There are some dungeons that are restricted to crafters only, such as mines. None of the monsters that reside within are hostile unless attacked, in which their materials can be harvested after being defeated. It is possible to beat these monsters by utilizing crafting skills such as mining.

Floors (Layers or Stages; 層) The game's structure is divided into different worlds that are called floors or layers. To access the next layer, the player must defeat a specific boss in order to move on to the next floor.

====================================

First Floor:

The first floor is where most players start. The floor's theme is inspired by fantasy and spiritual elements found in different folklore. This floor mostly comprises green forests and fields, large bodies of water, and other natural landscape formations. In these forests, there are insectoid and mammalian monsters.

The First Floor consists of a town with a natural aesthetic to it, the houses that are there mainly have a wooden appearance to their infrastructure, and a large tree with orbs of light orbiting around it that are surrounded by a small pond with rocks in it, with there being people in the town with different styles of clothing, and above the town are islands floating in the sky.

====================================

Second Floor:

A medieval-style floor in which architecture spans a wide area of the world. The architecture is mainly inspired by the medieval and reconnaissance ages, while still bearing resemblance to modern-day buildings. Most of the guilds and their guild houses are established here; the most notable ones are Maple Tree, Congregation of the Holy Swords, and the Kingdom of the Flame Emperor.

The second floor consists of a town with a more stoney aesthetic to it. It has a fixture in the central plaza with small jewels around a larger one.

====================================

Third Floor:

A floor that still retains medieval elements, but most of its architecture is made out of machinery. Machinery and mechanical parts are seen everywhere on this floor.

History

Long ago, a being known as the Machine Lord brought many inventions to the people. They were astonished by it's mechanisms but couldn't figure out how they worked. Eventually the second generation Machine Lord replaced the original one along with his inventions. He also rewrote everyone's memories about the old inventions.

Description, Society, and Culture

The Third Floor consists of a totally mechanized city with plenty of steampunk elements.

When Maple ran into an NPC, she was told of the Machine God, who later gives Maple an eponymous skill. She later defeats the boss using the skill, transforming her into a large machine with multiple weapons.

This is where Maple destroyed a Four-Armed Robot that led to the fourth floor with help from Kanade's magic.

====================================

Fourth Floor

A traditional Japanese-themed floor. The NPCs residing in this layer are mostly Japanese spirits or beings called the Yōkai. Kasumi later obtains a new set of equipment in this layer after defeating a sentient sword boss located in a basement.

A traditional Japanese-themed floor that is perpetually night-time. The NPCs residing in this layer are mostly Japanese spirits or beings called the Yōkai. In the light novel, players were challenged to reach the center by raising their rank. Because of this Oni and Yōkai were revealed after Kasumi reached Rank 9. After that players are requested to collect three specific items: the Dewdrop of Heaven, the Dragon's Scale and the Red Oni's horn. After which the Demonic Monk can be fought against for a powerful skill.

Maple defeated this floor's boss, a blue Fox Spirit with a white and red mask, with members from the Congregation of the Holy Swords separately from her guild because she got sick.

====================================

Fifth Floor:

A cloud-themed floor that has weather-related bosses.

The Fifth Floor is a location set on platforms made of clouds. The ground is bouncy for people to bounce off of and soft to lay on. The homes are shaped like brown hazelnuts with spheres of grassy earth dotted everywhere. There is also a tall wooden structure in the middle resembling a long tree trunk

The Maple Tree guild took on a yellow Giant Jellyfish as the boss.

====================================

Sixth Floor:

A horror-genre floor filled with spirits, zombies, and Haunted Houses.

The Sixth Floor is a haunted area complete with graveyards, dead trees and a haunted mansion.

The Maple Tree guild took on the boss together after the seventh event ended.

A Giant Spectre was the boss which the Maple Tree guild took down together.

====================================

Seventh Floor:

The seventh floor has a vast natural landscape with snowy mountains, steep cliffs, and volcanoes visible in the distance. This is the floor where a lot of monster entities live. There are also friendly critters in the land, so it may be possible that some may join the player as their own monster companion.

The Seventh Floor is a large place with many different biomes. In the center is a small town where NPCs with monsters gather surrounded by a large tree. Maple mentions that it bears similarities to the map of the Second Event.

====================================

Environment:

Players can find themselves in many extreme situations in NWO. Some of these situations could include being covered in snow on a mountain, walking through a desert or lava, and being covered in fire or other elemental attacks. The system offsets these extreme conditions to prevent any health constraints. For example, a block of snow that fell on a player's head will not feel cold at all, and the player won't feel dehydrated when walking through an extremely hot region in real life, like in a desert.

While it was not stated in the anime, a fatigue system exists in-game.? The effects of this fatigue system is shown with Sally.

====================================

Quests:

Players acquire quests through many means, such as picking up an item or talking to an NPC. The rewards vary greatly, from a little money or experience to acquiring game-breaking skills. Many quests have simple limitations such as equipment type, stat amounts, or a chain of actions.

====================================

Character:

Players have in-game manifestations called Avatars or Characters, which are influenced by the build they create and the decisions they choose to follow.

====================================

Statistics:

This terminology refers to HP, MP, STR, VIT, AGI, DEX, and INT, the basic scores defining a character's build. Frequently shortened as stat or stats.

HP or Health Points is the indication of a character's continued ability to function.

MP or Magic/Mana Points indicates the character's capability to cast active skills.

STR or Strength is a character's physical power and carrying capacity.

VIT or Vitality is a character's measure of armor or defence.

AGI or Agility refers to a character's attack and movement speed.

DEX or Dexterity functions as the overall luck of a character.

INT or Intelligence is related to the damage to the active skills of a character.

Players are given 100 stat points when starting the game, which they can assign to whatever stat they wish to raise. Every two levels, a player receives 5 stat points. On levels ending in 0, such as ten, twenty or etc., they receive 10 stat points instead. HP and MP increase by 20 per point.

A high VIT score scales down the damage received by poison.

There are skills that affect the one-for-one ratio for stats, such as [Absolute Defense] and [Conqueror] (Maple, Mai, and Yui, respectively).

====================================

Weapons:

Weapons are offensive items that are used by a character to cause damage to other entities in-game, preferably monsters. Starter weapons are acquired from the beginner weapon selection at the start of the game, while the rest of the weapons are looted from chests, bought, or created. These weapons specify a character's build and even limit their progress due to game restrictions.

====================================

Skills:

Players can acquire skills by doing or repeating actions that meet their requirements or prerequisites. These actions might be as simple as defeating something with your shield 15 times, buying some items from a store, receiving multiple poison attacks, or using a skill scroll. Prerequisites also may be as simple as having 10 in a specific stat. Though skills may be forgotten, the only way to acquire them again is by paying a fee. The fee is either 50,000 or 500,000, varying between different media.

====================================

Party:

A party is an organized group of players, but not necessarily a Guild, that goes on to accomplish a specific task, quest or event. The maximum size of a single party is 8.

====================================

Monster companion:

The monster companions are passive, tamable critters in NewWorld Online, which are extremely rare. They first appeared during the 2nd event. Although this event marked their first appearance in-game, they weren't fully accessible to players until the seventh layer was released so that they would become commonly available to everyone.

When a player acquires a monster companion, they gain a ring accessory called the [Bridge of Bonds]. Any time this companion would die, they are instead transported inside their ring to recover and cannot be awakened for a day later.

When the seventh layer was released, [Bridge of Bonds] were restricted so players could only have one for their first companion. Other tamed monsters must be kept in the real world and likely die completely when killed.

Classification:

Mythical Beast:

So far, the are only four existences of Mythical Beast eggs that are seen. They were items that could be acquired during the second event. Extremely powerful bosses guarded the eggs, which were believed to be impossible to defeat, and was out of most of the players' league to fight. There were no given clues that would reveal information on how to hatch the eggs, that even the developers believed it would be physically impossible for players to acquire and hatch the eggs.

The avian boss Silverwing guarded the fox and turtle Mythical Beast eggs before it was defeated by the efforts of Maple and Sally. Maple chose the egg with green colors and hexagon-shaped outlines. Sally took the the remaining egg, which had a faint violet color. In the anime, the fox's egg is purely white, which is wrapped in a shimenawa, which colored white and red.[3] After a period of incubation, both eggs burst open to reveal a monster critter. Maple's egg hatched to reveal a turtle, which she named Syrup. The reason why Maple decided to name the monster Syrup is because she thinks she can combine its name with hers, which becomes Maple Syrup.

Sally's egg later hatched into a white fox, with a shimenawa wrapped on its neck. She named the fox critter Oboro. In other sources, Oboro's fox fire is violet, as opposed to his fox fire in the anime which have hot colors, such as orange or yellow.

The primary Sea Emperor, which was not seen in the anime, guarded the bird and wolf Mythical Beast eggs.

Mii acquired a phoenix that she named Ignis. Although unspecified, the phoenix is often seen as a legendary or mythological creature. Keeping the 2nd events Sea Emperor in mind, Ignis is likely the bird egg that was being guarded. When Iz calls Maple to meet up and then asks for help, Maple mentions her promise to level with Mii. Since the materials Iz needed would be in dangerous areas, Mii felt it would be good experience and decided to help. When asked whether she wants to ride a demon or a floating turtle, Mii happily calls out her companion and shows off Ignis.

Rare Beast:

The first rare-tier monster companion seen in the series are the bears that the twins, Mai and Yui, acquired. A player can acquire a bear by finding its lair, which is a cave, and defeating it in combat. In the case for the twins, they followed the bear onto the cave and defeated them with practically no effort, only one attack was enough to finish the bear. This bear monster theoretically had the [Megamorph] skill, which it presumably used before its battle with Mai and Yui.

This bear monster companion probably has a difficulty level for players, but the twins just bulldozed through the fight and acquired the monster companion easily, so it is unspecified how high the actual difficulty is. The bears' names are Tsukimi and Yukimi.

Kasumi acquired a rare-tier white snake critter that she named Haku. Although unspecified, the difficulty level to acquire this monster companion is higher than the bear critter. It was presumably obtainable through a quest that was added in an earlier layer, which was shown under Kasumi's history. Acquiring this companion requires combat, wisdom, and discovery experience. Even after entering the Fog Valley in a Faraway Land, it was still a challenge for Kasumi.

Chrome acquired a rare-tier floating armor companion that he named Necro. Although unspecified, the companion is likely rare because the treasure map he used to acquire it is a rare drop from a dungeon the locations to check on the treasure were unlikely to have companion monsters. Chrome found several things he could sell at the places you check for treasure before finding Necro.

Misery showed off Bell, her fluffy white cat, to Maple before the 8th event. Because of Bells progression, Misery believes him to be both a late bloomer and rare. He has learned supportive passive effects and no active skills.

Other:

More common monster companions make their appearance in NewWorld Online, although almost all of the details about them are still obscure and undisclosed.

Kanade acquired a transparent mimic that he named Sou. Although unspecified, the monster companion can be acquired by completing a quest that anyone can get and defeat ones self which can probably be manipulated quite easily. A good memory makes its easier to get the quest.

Iz acquired a color-changing spirit that she named Fay. Although unspecified, the monster companion can be acquired by completing a quest that anyone can get. The quest has one gather materials from the layer and craft items to earn the fairies favor.

Frederica acquired a small yellow bird that she named Knots (ノーツ). She showed up to have a duel with Sally with the intention of showing off her companion but Sally was afraid she acquired a ghostly companion and killed her before she could call Knots out. After the duel, Frederica showed off Knots and teased Sally.

Customization:

With the release of the seventh floor, which included a new system that makes it possible so that all players are able to obtain a monster companion, the ability to customize the critter's appearance, as well as its skills or effects, became available.

Shortly after the twins acquired their bear companions, Iz was curious on what Mai and Yui was going to name the bears, and how they want to customize them. The former named her bear Tsukimi (ツキミ), modifying the color of its fur to become glossy black, and customized his skill effects to make it glow green. Yui chose the name Yukimi (ユキミ) for her bear. She changed the color of its fur to white, which makes it look like a polar bear, and customized its skills to make it glow pink.

Evolution:

To evolve, a companion must visit a watering place made of stone outside the town of animals. The town can only be visited by using three key items on an altar at the ruins of a city.

They key items are the gemstone found in a stream, the gemstone on the collar of a monster bird resembling Silverwing, and the gemstone that is the eye of a giant made of wind.

After Maple and Sally brought back and showed off their companions changes, Maple Tree discussed companion evolution. Because Chrome had visited the place where they found the giant made of wind and never seen the giant, they assumed their might be a level and/or affection requirement.
