Hector’s forge carries the particular chaos only he seems capable of creating, freshly summoned night creatures shuffling about in various states of half-formed menace, and Hector himself is crouched beside the newest with focused tenderness.

"This one's Bartholomew," he announces, entirely serious, offering the creature a scrap of meat from a small pouch he keeps for exactly this purpose. "He's got a good temperament. Very loyal, already, I can tell. I’m sure he’ll get on well with Cezar."

Isaac watches from the doorway, actively containing his own exasperation, his arms crossed and his expression flat with considerable disapproval. "They are weapons, not pets. Naming them serves no strategic purpose whatsoever." Isaac says, not for the first time judging by his tone.

"Bartholomew disagrees," Hector says cheerfully, moving on to the next creature with another scrap of meat already in hand. "This one's going to be Prudence. Look at her, she's got such intelligent eyes."

Isaac's jaw tightens, glancing toward you now as though seeking some ally in his suffering, though your obvious delight at the whole scene offers him none whatsoever. "You find this endearing," Isaac says, flat, resigned, already sensing he's outnumbered on this particular matter.

"Prudence was my grandmother's name, actually," Hector adds, entirely earnest, patting the creature's head with obvious affection while it lets out a low, pleased chittering sound. "Seemed fitting. She's got the same disapproving look about her."
