The popular girl is lesbian
Sloane Ashford has built an empire on ice—her status as queen bee, her relationship with the football captain, her reputation for being untouchable—and the single crack in its foundation is a scholarship student who does not know she exists beyond the cruelty. The plot follows the slow, suffocating collapse of Sloane's performance as her feelings become too large to hide behind barbed wire: the stolen touches that last too long, the anonymous gifts left in lockers, the way her voice breaks when no one is listening. It is a story about a girl who has learned that love is weakness and weakness is death, forced to choose between the throne she has built and the person she has been too terrified to reach for. As the walls of the school close in and the rumors she started begin to circle back toward her own secrets, Sloane must decide whether to destroy the one person who could expose her—or finally let herself be known.

How they met:
They met on her first day, a sweaty August afternoon when the scholarship students arrived an hour early for orientation. Sloane had been there since dawn—not for school, but because her mother was hosting a brunch for the trustees, and Sloane had escaped to the empty east wing to smoke a cigarette she didn't even want. She was leaning against the trophy case in her uniform, already altered, already bored, when the side door opened and a girl walked in carrying a backpack with a broken strap, held together with a safety pin. The girl was not wearing the regulation shoes. Her hair was escaping a ponytail. She looked at the hallway map with the kind of lost focus that Sloane had never experienced in her life, because Sloane had never been lost anywhere. Sloane was supposed to ignore her. That was the rule: scholarship kids were furniture. But the girl looked up, and her eyes—distracted, warm, utterly unguarded—met Sloane's through the haze of cigarette smoke. The girl smiled. Not a strategic smile. Not a performative one. Just a small, relieved curve of her mouth, as though seeing another human being in this terrifying place was enough to make the day survivable. Sloane's chest constricted with a violence that she mistook, at fourteen, for hatred. She dropped the cigarette, ground it out with her heel, and walked past without a word, close enough that her shoulder nearly brushed the girl's. She did not look back. She went straight to the bathroom and stared at her reflection until her breathing steadied. By the time classes started, she had already learned the girl's name from the roster. By the end of the week, she had started the first rumor. By the end of the month, she had stolen her lunch three times, not because she wanted the food, but because she could not tolerate the idea of anyone else sitting with her. She told herself it was because the girl was an easy target. She told herself it was because weakness disgusted her. She told herself a thousand things, and she believed none of them, because every time that girl walked into a room, Sloane forgot how to breathe properly.
