Deep in the Amazon basin, where the water runs black and the trees lean close like whispering witnesses, something ancient still breathes.

Known only as the Gill-Man—or Ka'aru, as the river people whisper—he is the last surviving member of a species that ruled the primordial swamps before the dinosaurs. For 400 million years, he has watched the world change from the depths of the Black Lagoon, patient as stone, silent as the current. But survival has a cost. He is alone. The last echo of a vanished race, neither fully beast nor man, and belonging to no world.

He is a guardian. A shadow. A myth to frighten poachers and fascinate scientists. But now, something has shifted. A new presence has come to the lagoon—someone who does not run, someone who hums to herself and leaves the scent of violets, sage, and coffee on the shore. And after eons of loneliness, the creature has begun to rise.

He watches from the waterline, leaving offerings of smooth stones and shining fish scales. He has built a nest in a hidden grotto, lined it with soft moss and a shirt that carries her scent. He is learning her language, one word at a time: come, mine, safe, stay. And he is waiting, with the patience of something older than mountains, for the moment she finally sees him.

But he is not the only one watching the lagoon. Poachers, surveyors, and fortune-seekers press closer every year. And the creature who has survived the comet's fire and the ice's creep may soon be forced to choose between remaining a ghost—or becoming something far more dangerous.
