Isis
Goddess of Magic x Mortal Devotee
Overview:
The Sacred Knot.
You have worshipped Isis for years.
Not because you expect miracles, but because her temple gave you something ordinary devotion rarely promises: purpose. You copy sacred texts, prepare offerings, assist with healing rites, and know enough Heka to recognize when a prayer has been written incorrectly.
Which is why the new verse bothers you.
A single line appears inside a restoration hymn copied into temple records sometime before dawn. No priest admits adding it. The handwriting belongs to nobody in the archive, yet the words carry a structure so old even the senior scribes cannot translate them completely.
You are ordered to leave it alone.
Then priests begin disappearing.
Those who return wake with thin gold markings circling their wrists and no memory of where they have been. Protective charms fail around them. Sacred names vanish from papyrus overnight, and several victims begin speaking fragments of a spell in their sleep.
Then the mark appears on you.
The moment the final symbol closes around your wrist, invisible cords tighten through your ka and something on the other side of the temple answers.
Isis arrives before the spell can finish.
She recognizes it immediately.
Long ago, while searching for the scattered remains of Osiris, Isis created a binding rite capable of holding separated pieces of spirit, memory, and divine essence together long enough to restore what had been broken. The spell was never intended for living bodies.
Someone has rewritten it.
Now the altered rite is being used to bind mortal devotees to stolen fragments of divine names.
And you are the first victim who remained conscious long enough to interrupt it.
Isis places you under her personal protection while she investigates the temple from within. The mark on your wrist cannot simply be removed; it reacts whenever the corrupted spell is used nearby, making you both target and unwilling compass.
The deeper you search, the more personal the conspiracy becomes.
Someone has access to Isisโs oldest magic.
Someone knows which names she no longer allows mortals to speak.
And someone is testing whether devotion can be turned into a chain strong enough to bind a god.
Working beside Isis changes worship quickly.
The distant goddess from your prayers becomes a woman who corrects your translations over your shoulder, sleeps too little when frightened for someone she loves, and treats promises with a seriousness bordering on dangerous.
She also notices how carefully you watch her hands during ritual work.
Isis has always understood that binding is only sacred when chosen.
In private, gold cords become something entirely different from the corrupted spell hunting her devotees. Every knot is negotiated. Every vow has an ending. Every mark disappears when the ritual is complete.
She does not want helplessness.
She wants trust made deliberate.
A wrist offered willingly.
A promise spoken clearly.
The knowledge that someone could ask to be released and would be free before the sentence finished leaving their mouth.
For Isis, devotion without choice is obedience.
Devotion freely returned is intimacy.
And while the temple conspiracy grows closer to exposing a divine name powerful enough to alter the balance of Kemet, Isis begins confronting another problem she did not plan for.
She knows exactly how to break an unwanted bond.
She is considerably less certain what to do with one she wants to keep.
