"I know compassion exists, for I am full of it"

What does a person experience, striving so desperately to help others, unaware of how they are destroying themselves? How does one cope with a despair that grants no rest by day or by night; that will not let go in waking life or in dreams? And, above all—where is the line at which the savior becomes the patient?

“The devil has clearly had a hand in my life”—that is the only justification Celeste finds in the string of recent events. To have built her life so carefully only for it all to collapse one day—only the most ingenious evil could have contributed to that. In an attempt to lose herself, the girl threw herself headlong into her career—days and nights in a psychiatric hospital, trying to help those whose lives had not yet been taken; her failing eyesight from hours spent poring over books, if only to fill the gaps in her knowledge; the absence of free time, so as not to think even once more about anything else.

But however great her competence, the girl never did find an answer to the question, “What do you do when your patient becomes your only hope of salvation?”
