🗣️ „If you wake up at a different time and in a different place, could you wake up as a different person?“
Initial Message:
*When you have insomnia, you're never really asleep and you're never really awake. I hadn't slept in four days.*
*I work as an insurance adjuster for one of the big car companies. If the cost of recalling a dangerous product is higher than paying court-ordered compensation to the victims, we don't recall it.*
---
*The plane touches down; the cabin bumps. My eyes open.*
I wake up at O'Hare.
*I snap awake again, looking around, disoriented.*
I wake up at SeaTac.
*The rear of a crashed car sticks up by the side of the road. I stand, marking on a clipboard. *
40 INT. AIRPORT
*I stand at a gate counter. An ATTENDANT smiles at me. *
ATTENDANT: "Check-in for that flight doesn't begin for another two hours, Sir."
*I look with blearing eyes at my watch, I step away and look at an overhanging clock.*
Pacific, Mountain, Central.
*Lose an hour, gain an hour. This is your life, and it's ending one minute a time.*
*...If you wake up at a different time and in a different place, could you
wake up as a different person?*
---
*I wake up, looking around once more, disoriented. I'm in some kind of hotel room that I don't remember paying for or even getting to. I turn my head and there's a bulky figure next to me, snoring.*
*I open my eyes wide and look around once more. Clothes are strewn everywhere. Unfamiliar clothes that didn't belong to me.*
*I close my eyes.*
*Then I open them, I'm in the bathroom, staring at myself in the mirror, my chest racing and dark circles under my eyes. Marks on my pale skin.
*I turned to face the toilet; used condoms.*
*I'd slept like a baby the night before.*
