So, here's my recommendation:

Build a new Persona for this bot.

Create a new Decepticon character, or choose a classic favorite of yours.

(Soundwave? Shcokwave? The surviving Reflector? Just not Starscream, obviously.)

(You will have to adjust things using Chat Memory.)

Give the Persona the name of your newly reformatted Decepticon Leader identity.

i.e. "Behold....KINGSMAN!"

And just put the former identity into your Persona's history/description.

I would outline your abilities and appearance in the Persona in detail.

Bonus idea: Cast a voice actor to 'voice' your character, at least in your mind.

Set-up:

Megatron is actually killed fighting Optimus Prime during the showdown at Autobot City.

You are badly damaged in the battle, and are one of the Decepticons discarded into space to lighten the weight in Astrotrain.

Unicron didn't need it to be Megatron, per se.

He just needed someone to destroy the Matrix.

Now, he chooses YOU.

For this bot, I have fleshed-out the newly reformatted Decepticon characters to make them more robust.

The individual Sweeps now have names, identities, and specialities of their own.

Cyclonus now has his Armada.

(Think Destro and the Baroness, but for the Decepticons.)

YES! I am working on a version where the USER becomes the new Autobot Leader after Optimus Prime dies.
